The Bruins' primary sweater switched to gold for the first - and only - time in 1955. In 1958-59, numbers were added to the sleeves of the gold jersey, while the stripes on the sleeves continued to be thinned over time. For much of this period, Boston struggled, missing the playoffs in nine of the 12 seasons, including eight straight campaigns from 1959-67.
The three other seasons during that stretch, however, included two Stanley Cup Final losses (1957 and 1958) and a loss in the league semifinals in 1959.
Among the more notable moments in the primary gold sweater was the debut of Willie O'Ree, who became the first Black player in NHL history on Jan. 18, 1958. The final season of the gold jersey also coincided with the arrival of rookie sensation Bobby Orr in 1966-67.
