Penner, Whitfield Recalled by Bruins

BOSTON - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has recalled forward Trent Whitfield and defenseman Jeff Penner from the Providence Bruins (American Hockey League) on an emergency basis. Whitfield and Penner will join the club today and be available for tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:00 p.m. at the TD Garden (100 Legends Way, Boston, MA 02114).

The 32-year-old Whitfield last played with the Bruins against the Carolina Hurricanes on January 24 and has played in 14 games with the B’s this season, earning his first assist and point as a Bruin against the Columbus Blue Jackets on January 21. He was recalled from Providence from October 21 to November 21 and then again from January 8 to January 27. Whitfield has skated in 49 games with the Providence Bruins this year and ranks second on the team in goals scored with 17 (17-24=41 totals) and has registered 20 PIM.

Whitfield spent most of 2008-2009 playing with the Peoria Rivermen of the AHL. In 69 games played, Whitfield led the team with 30 assists and 50 points, while finishing second in goals scored with 20. Whitfield played in three NHL games for the St. Louis Blues during the 2008-09 season and notched one assist. He has played in 177 career NHL games with the Blues, Washington Capitals and New York Rangers recording 11-17=28 totals. The 5’11” 204-pound Alameda, Saskatchewan native was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round (100th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. The forward was signed by Boston to a one-year contract on July 13, 2009.

The 22 year-old Penner made his NHL/Bruins debut on Tuesday, March 9 and played 9:18 in the Bruins/Leafs game in Toronto and was a healthy scratch against the Flyers on March 11. He was signed by the Bruins as a free agent on March 29, 2008 and spent the 2008-09 season in Providence, skating in 80 games and registering 10-18=28 totals, which were second on the team among defensemen. This season, Penner has skated in 59 games for Providence, registering 6-24=30 totals and 20 PIM.

The 5’10” 183-pound Steinbach, Manitoba native played one season of college hockey at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks with 5-7=12 totals and 49 PIM in 35 games during his freshman season where he received an honorable mention for the CCHA All-Rookie Team.
