Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 3-2 Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. The P-Bruins got goals from Sean Curry, Vladimir Sobotka and Martins Karsums. The 8-1 Bruins return to Portland Saturday, November 10 at 7:05 p.m.
After a scoreless opening period, the P-Bruins took the first lead of the game at the 10:11 mark. Pascal Pelletier took a shot and Curry put home the rebound. Providence extended its lead to 2-0 while on the power play at the 12:15 mark. Karsums sent a cross-ice pass to Pelletier. He sent the puck to Sobotka, who was waiting backdoor. Sobotka flipped the puck past Pirates goaltender Jonas Hiller and into the net. Portland battled back with a power play goal of its own at the 14:05 mark. Aaron Rome scored on a shot from the high slot with Andrew Ebbett and Jason King recording the assists. The game went into the second intermission with Providence leading 2-1.
In the third period, the P-Bruins added another goal at the 11:38 mark. The Pirates turned the puck over in their own end as it deflected off of Pelletier’s skate and onto the stick of Karsums. He took a slap shot and sent the puck past Hiller to give the P-Bruins a 3-1 advantage. With the goaltender pulled the Pirates scored at the 18:34 mark to pull within a goal. Ryan Carter scored from just outside the crease with Stephen Dixon and Matt Keith getting the assists. With the extra attacker on the ice, the Pirates continued to put pressure on the P-Bruins net, but Providence held on for the 3-2 victory.
Mike Brown played in net for the P-Bruins stopping 29 of 31 shots, while Hiller made 26 saves for the Pirates. The P-Bruins were 1-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.
