No Setbacks for The Sheriff

by John Bishop / Boston Bruins -- Shane Hnidy was the lone player in Black & Gold to hit the ice on Thursday, but only time will tell if the former B's defenseman is added to the current Bruins roster.

However, after his second day working out with the B's,  Hnidy said he didn't suffer any setbacks as he attempts to come back from what he jokingly called an "upper body" injury while with the Bruins for a tryout.

"No, you know I’m trying to come back without causing any damage, but I’m trying to maintain and get on the ice as much as I could the past month or two and gradually get into this," he said. "Obviously, the pace is quicker, as I said before, and it’s just a matter of getting that timing back."

Physically, Hnidy said he is close.

"I obviously will find out more as we go here," said Hnidy. "I’m pretty much cleared to do everything, but obviously there are a few more steps and right now that’s what our focus is.

"It feels really good, but I want to work on the conditioning aspect and get that up to par."

Hnidy explained that he had tried to keep his skating legs as he rehabbed.

"I tried to get on the ice as much as I could, whether it was guys playing pick up or a team to practice with," he said. "As much as you do that it helps, but you want to get out here for this caliber."

"I was very lucky with everyone who helped me to get me to this point. It feels good shooting...and all the tests are up to par and I continue to keep elevating."

Being back in the B's locker room has elevated Hnidy's spirits, as well.

"Like I said, I can't believe the chemistry here and that’s such an integral part of a team's success," said the veteran defenseman. "Obviously, some guys I’ve been friends with, we’ve kept in touch, [Shawn] Thornton and [Zdeno] Chara and a few others. It helps that some of those guys are here.

"And Mark Recchi is such a big part. To have that level of experience and character that he brings, it just kind of adds to the leadership group along with Chara’s [being] captain.

"So it’s a great group...[and] I want to get in there, get to know guys as quick as possible," he said.
