BOSTON - The Bruins have not been in this position in over two years.
When they take the ice on Saturday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Black & Gold will be aiming to snap a three-game losing streak - their longest such skid since the 2019-20 season.

With injuries piling up and losses mounting - Boston has lost four of five - the B's are trying to adopt a measured approach with just eight games remaining in the regular season.
"It's not always gonna go your way," said Bruins alternate captain Brad Marchand. "It's how we regroup. We're sitting in a good spot here at this point in the season and we just have to worry about the next game. Regardless of how we felt last game or the game before that, it's time to let it go and come in with a good attitude and just focus on the next one."
Boston can clinch a playoff spot on Friday night if the Islanders lose in any fashion to the Montreal Canadiens.

Marchand Addresses Media After Practice on Friday

Here's everything else you need to know ahead of Saturday's 12:30 p.m. ET puck drop on NESN and 98.5 The Sports Hub:

      On the Injury Front

After missing Thursday's loss to the Senators with an undisclosed injury, Brandon Carlo was back on the ice for practice on Friday morning and could be in the lineup on Saturday afternoon.
"We'll see how he is in the morning," said Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy. "But practiced today, so that's a good sign."
Linus Ullmark did not take part in the skate after leaving Thursday night's game following the first period. The netminder took a shot to the helmet and reported to team trainers that he was not feeling right, per Cassidy. With Ullmark considered day-to-day, Jeremy Swayman will get the call against the Penguins with Troy Grosenick up from Providence to back-up.
"Mindset stays the same," said Swayman. I want to play every night and make sure I'm giving this team a chance to win every night. Obviously, I hope he has a speedy recovery. I know he will."
Matt Grzelcyk returned to the lineup against the Senators after missing one game with an upper-body injury and was a full participant in Friday's practice.
"We've dealt with it on a game-to-game basis," said Cassidy. "Right now, he's good. Should be fine [Saturday]."
Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand both stayed off the ice for Friday's optional session in favor of rest and recovery. Both are expected to play on Saturday, per Cassidy.
"It's just getting to that point in the season where we've been playing a lot," said Marchand. "Bodies have kind of gone through a lot, stuff that nags. It's always good to have a mental reset and get off the ice and have a day to regroup. That was the biggest thing after a couple tough results…recovery is such a weapon in the game."
David Pastrnak and Hampus Lindholm skated on their own before Friday's practice at Warrior Ice Arena.

      Headed Back In

Trent Frederic will be back in the lineup on Saturday following a healthy scratch on Thursday night. Tomas Nosek will be the odd man out up front with Cassidy opting to keep Nick Foligno, Marc McLaughlin, and Curtis Lazar together after a strong showing against the Sens.
With Frederic returning, Cassidy is hopeful that the B's third line, which also features Charlie Coyle and Craig Smith, can rebound after a shaky stretch of late.
"I think that line is struggling. They're not generating enough down low," said Cassidy. For example, Foligno's line [against Ottawa], some of that old fashioned put a guy on your hip and get it to the net, recover a puck. That's usually what gets him started.
"All of a sudden the rush game hasn't been there for them much for whatever reason. It's some ups and downs. There's a little bit of that going on with our group, the top guys have been a little bit silent."

The Penguins clinched their 16th consecutive playoff berth on Thursday night - the longest active streak in North American professional sports - with a 6-3 win over the Islanders. Pittsburgh is just 2-4-1 during the month of April but remains firmly in third place in the Metro Division with 97 points, five clear of Washington.
Pittsburgh will be without Evgeni Malkin, who is in the midst of serving a four-game suspension for cross-checking. Goalie Tristan Jarry (lower-body) will not travel to Boston, according PittsburghPenguins.com.
The Penguins were announced on Wednesday night as the B's opponent for the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park. The teams will also meet again next Thursday in Pittsburgh.
