Mike Sullivan named Assistant Coach of U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey today announced that Mike Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.), head coach of the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins, will serve as an assistant coach for the 2006 United States Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team that will compete in the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, Feb. 15-26.
USA Hockey previously announced Peter Laviolette (Franklin, Mass.), head coach of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, as head coach of the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team.
“We’re pleased to have someone with Mike’s knowledge and passion on board to assist in guiding our Olympic team,” said Don Waddell, Team USA general manager and also the executive vice president and general manager of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers. “Mike is a terrific fit and will be a valuable part of our staff.”
Sullivan, who will be part of a Team USA coaching staff for the first time, completed his first season as Boston’s head coach in 2003-04 after becoming the 26th head coach in team history on June 23, 2003. As the youngest NHL head coach at the age of 36, he led the club to the Northeast Division title and the second-best record in the Eastern Conference with a 41-19-15-7 mark, 104 points and a .634 winning percentage.
Sullivan came to Boston after serving one season as the head coach of the Bruins' American Hockey League affiliate in Providence. His record behind the Providence bench was 41-17-9-4 through March 20, 2003, when he was promoted to Boston as an assistant coach under interim head coach Mike O'Connell.
Sullivan spent 11 years playing in the NHL (1991-2002) with San Jose, Calgary, Boston, and Phoenix. He played in 709 career NHL games and recorded 54 goals and 82 assists. He was chosen by the New York Rangers as the 69th overall pick in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.
USA Hockey also announced that Keith Allain (Centerville, Mass.), goaltending coach of the St. Louis Blues, will serve as an assistant coach for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team.
