BOSTON - Charlie McAvoy is checking the boxes. And that means it shouldn't be long before the Bruins' ace blue liner is back in the lineup.
"He's getting close," coach Jim Montgomery said following Wednesday's practice at Warrior Ice Arena. "He'll be playing within a week. I'm not going to confirm or deny that [he'll play Thursday night against Calgary] because there's boxes left to be checked."

McAvoy has not played this season as he's continued to rehab from offseason shoulder surgery that repaired an injury he suffered in Game 6 of the B's first-round playoff series against Carolina last May. The defenseman has been back skating since training camp and has been practicing with his teammates for the past two weeks as he progresses toward a return.
"Just internally, feeling good about where we are," said McAvoy. "As far as check marks and things like that, I just say that we feel really good about where we're at, so [I'm] getting excited."
The 24-year-old underwent left shoulder arthroscopic surgery on June 3 and was initially given a timeline of six months to make a full recovery, which would have had him back in the lineup around the first week of December. But like Brad Marchand, McAvoy has been a bit ahead of schedule thanks to the outstanding work of the Bruins' medical staff.
"I think it's a testament to everybody, really… the doctors and the trainers and everybody," said McAvoy. "Obviously, working hard to get back early and we're getting close."
Montgomery, likewise, praised Boston's medical personnel for their work to get McAvoy, Marchand, and Matt Grzelcyk back into the lineup safely. Boston's bench boss also mentioned that Jeremy Swayman (considered week-to-week) is trending "a couple of days ahead of schedule" after suffering a lower-body injury in the Bruins' win over Pittsburgh last week.
"There's a lot that's a credit to them and the great work they do to get our players back on the ice and ready to play and play well," said Montgomery, who added that Swayman is "more mobile than we expected by now" but the goaltender is "not even on the ice yet, so he's not close."

McAvoy speaks with media after practice on Wednesday

McAvoy said that while he's been monitoring how he's feeling internally, he's also been working closely with team doctors to determine when his shoulder is structurally sound enough for game action.
"You always have to get to a comfortable point where they feel like the healing, the integrity of the injury, the healing has to be sure," said McAvoy. "We've got to be sure of that. So, that's really the most important step.
"And then from there, obviously, it's feeling, it's listening to your body. It's accomplishing things that you need to do in order to return to play."
Along those lines, McAvoy said he has been working toward integrating more body contact as the latest step in his progress, while admitting that it's difficult to get a true feel for that during practice.
"You try your best. And that's something that we're working on right now, continuing to do it and getting in the battles and lifting sticks hard, guys trying to be out taking that contact and trying to feel good," said McAvoy.
"That's something that's big, especially as a defenseman, feeling confident when you're going back on pucks that whatever position you're in, you're going to be able to make the play and you're not going to be worrying about that contact. It's hard to mimic the game. It really is. But I think we've done a good job of trying."
During Wednesday's practice at Warrior Ice Arena, McAvoy skated alongside Hampus Lindholm, reuniting what was Boston's top pairing at times last spring following Lindholm's arrival at the trade deadline.
"He's been playing awesome hockey as well as all the defensemen. Everybody really who's been coming in," said McAvoy. "To watch these guys every night has been amazing. Lindy certainly has looked incredible, and he's been playing amazing and it's been really fun to watch as have other guys, too…if I do get to play with Lindy, that'll be a blast. He's a great defenseman, so definitely make my life easy."
Ultimately, McAvoy added, he'll be pleased to play with anybody on Boston's back end.
"I don't really mind who I play with," said McAvoy. "We have a lot of really special defenders on this team, so no matter who I'm with, it's always the same for me as I try and make their life easier. And I know that they try to do the same and feed off each other to play a good game."
Montgomery, meanwhile, is excited about the different possibilities that he has in front of him when it comes to determining his defense pairings moving forward.
"I guess with how diverse our back end is, it gives us a lot of options depending on who we're playing, what we want to match up with McAvoy or Lindholm or [Brandon] Carlo, Grizz," he said. "You get [Derek] Forbort back [from injury]…we're really deep back there with options of who we can use with who."

Wait, There's More

  • Mike Reilly was placed on waivers for purpose of assignment to Providence on Wednesday afternoon.
  • Montgomery on the play of Connor Clifton this season: "He's a really gifted athlete as far as how much he can handle…he's really competitive…he plays the game like he loves it. And I think that's why everybody in the room and the coaching staff and, I think, the fans, the Bruins fans, love him because he's always playing the game to win, and that's why you play."
  • McAvoy on Clifton, who has been playing with Lindholm on the B's top pair for the past four games: "He's just always been a stud…might be just the opportunity. But a lot of it, internally, is stuff that we've seen forever. He competes every single shift. He doesn't take shifts off. He's physical. He can play an offensive side that I think many people might realize just how good he can be in all aspects. So, to see him playing, how well he's done, it's just great. And, obviously, he's an incredible person."
