Lewis and Chara...

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins
Coach Lewis was asked this morning to look around the locker room and assess his players and whether, if together for 82 games, they could be a playoff contender.

"We’re growing as a team," said Lewis. "We’ve made changes in all areas -- forwards, defense and goaltending -- and I would like to think that the team we have (in here) today would be good enough to be competing for a playoff spot.

"That is something we want to do (and) we want to get to that.

"But it’s not just competing for a playoff spot (because) there is not much satisfaction if you make the playoffs and lose in the first round," he explained.

Lewis clarified his position.

"I think we have grow (more) to get us into a position to be more successful throughout the regular season and into the playoffs," continued Coach. "We are not there yet."

Zdeno Chara was candid about his feelings about his first Bruins team.

"We lost some games we should have won," admitted Chara. "And we made some mistakes that we shouldn’t have made.

"And…you feel sorry that you made those mistakes.

"But you can’t really regret them because if you didn’t make them, then you wouldn’t know how to learn from them," he said.

What about missing the playoffs, Z?

"Obviously we would love to be in the playoffs," said Zdeno. "But right now we are out of the playoffs and you just have to learn from that (situation).

"You always want to have a good season. And you want to be in the playoffs. And you want to be competing for the Stanley Cup -- that’s the goal. I don’t think there is…a team in the NHL that doesn’t want to be in race and be in the hunt.

"And my coming here, obviously that’s my goal.

"And I am still gunning for that," said Chara.

Big Z was pressed to answer the same questions Coach Lewis fielded.

"I can tell you that I really like the guys we have. And I still believe in this team. I really think we have a really good group of guys. We get along very well with each other and I think that is the most important thing -- that there is a good chemistry," he said.

"I still believe in this team," repeated the Captain. "I honestly believe that this is a good team…and we want to finish the season strong."

They can make headway on that this evening. Stay tuned…
