BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has recalled defenseman Jeff Penner from the Providence Bruins on an emergency basis (American Hockey League). Penner is expected to join the club for Tuesday’s game in Toronto against the Maple Leafs at 7:00 p.m. at the Air Canada Centre.
The 22 year-old defenseman was signed by the Bruins as a free agent on March 29, 2008 and spent the 2008-09 season in Providence, skating in 80 games and registering 10-18=28 totals, which were second on the team among defenseman This season, Penner has skated in 55 games for Providence, registering 6-21=27 totals and 18 PIM.
The Steinbach, Manitoba native played one season of college hockey at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks with 5-7=12 totals and 49 PIM in 35 games during his freshman season where he received an honorable mention for the CCHA All-Rookie Team.
The Bruins will continue their seven-game road trip when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 9, at 7:00 p.m. at the Air Canada Centre.
