Hockey, Golf and More Golf

by John Bishop / Boston Bruins
7:49 p.m.

Nearly 12-hours later and the day is finally winding down.

From all I've seen on the tube and the "Swing Like Happy Gilmore" event was HUGE. The First Tee event was a big success, as well.

All in all, there's plenty of good to point to as the 2009-10 preseason begins. Every Bruin that I've run into over the last couple of days has talked about the bad taste left in their mouth from the end of last season. And to a man, all of them look like they are ready to start the new campaign.

Me, I've got pictures to cut up, stories to write and edit and videos to post, so stay tuned.

8:08 a.m.

It's going to be a busy day in the Hub of Hockey!

This morning, Milan Lucic will be on with Toucher and Rich on 98.5 FM at 8:05, and then will head over to Fox 25 for their morning show at 8:20. Then, some of the B's will hit the ice at Wilmington for another informal practice.

Meanwhile, Boston Bruins players, Byron Bitz, David Krejci, Shawn Thornton and Dennis Wideman along with Boston Bruins Foundation Director of Development Bob Sweeney and Bruins Alumni and Sports Hub 98.5 Color Commentator, Bob Beers will present a check for $18,000 to the Executive Director of The First Tee of Massachusetts, Joe McCabe, the Head Golf Professional at MGA Links, Pete Walsh, and young golfers from the MGA Junior Golf Fund on Tuesday, September 1 at TPC Boston.

The presentation will take place following the conclusion of the Deutsche Bank Red Sox Legends & Friends Pro-Am on the practice putting green (around 12:30).

Then, in the main event, fans are invited to join Lucic and Tim Thomas in the Boston Bruins Foundation’s "Swing Like Happy Gilmore Long Drive Contest" at Golf Country in Middleton, MA (160 South Main Street, Middleton, MA 01949). All proceeds from the event will benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation. Lucic and Thomas will serve as the celebrity judges in the contest. Lucic and Thomas will be available for media throughout the event.

A ten dollar donation to the Boston Bruins Foundation will allow fans of all ages three attempts to hit their ball as far as possible using a swing like the movie character "Happy Gilmore". The fan who hits the longest drive will receive two tickets to the Boston Bruins Foundation’s 6th annual Golf Tournament dinner where they will meet and dine with the Bruins players, coaches and executives who played in the afternoon’s tournament as well as an autographed Milan Lucic jersey. The second place winner will receive a Boston Bruins hockey stick putter signed by Lucic and Thomas.
