BOSTON BRUINS TRAINING CAMP

BOSTON BRUINS HEAD COACH CLAUDE JULIEN
On if there’s an update on defenseman Zdeno Chara…
Yeah, I think he’s day-to-day, you know, which is good news. You know that’s what I’ve been told and that’s all I can say right now.

On if he’ll be ready for the start of the regular season…
It’s day-to-day. That’s all I’ve been told. I’m not a doctor obviously, but day-to-day is good news for me. I thought it might be worse news last night.

On if there’s a chance people will see more cuts happening soon or sometime in the future…
Oh, I think you will. I wouldn’t say the future. It’s going to happen soon that we’re going to have to cut down. As I mentioned yesterday, we’ve got Providence camp starting I think it’s on Sunday. So there will be some cuts coming in a little while here. We’ve already made some so. We’ll just keep bringing the numbers down, but at the same time got some guys that are playing well and deserve to get some second and third looks.

On if he’ll just be bringing the lineup to Detroit for the game tomorrow…
Yeah, we’ll bring a couple extras just in case. But yeah it’ll be just the lineup to rest the guys who stay here, stay behind.

On how much injuries play a role in the decision to make cuts…
Well, it always does. I mean we’ve got two guys right now that got injured so there’s no doubt it gives other guys a better look and longer look and you know at the end of it we’ll have to see where we stand. But you know, at the same time, you’re hoping to have at least one of them back and the other one we know is probably an eight-week situation. So we’ll work through it.

On if Ryan Spooner will benefit from playing with Jimmy Hayes who is comparable to Milan Lucic size wise…
We’ll see. I think if anything I thought they looked better than yesterday, you know. I’ve said that they seem to be finding themselves a little bit better- to be adjusting to each other’s styles a little bit better. And I thought Brett [Connolly] played much better in that first game, you know and he was a good, strong contributor yesterday. So if we can continue to have those guys improve like that on a game-to-game basis in preseason we might have a decent line there.

On if Ryan Spooner does not need a fast line mate to succeed…
Yeah, but at the same time I think once Looch [Milan Lucic] got going he was a pretty good skater. You could see that in games when he got his speed going and you know. Obviously off to start might not have been his strength, but once he got those feet moving he was actually a pretty good skater. So, you know, same thing with Jimmy [Hayes]. He’s a big guy but, you know, so far like I said it’s just about adjusting. And you know it’s not like just Ryan [Spooner] just exudes speed through all areas, you know. He’s like anybody else- he’s got to support down low so he’s coming from underneath; he’s got to catch up you know on the rush and all that stuff. I think there’s no issues there versus speed and that more than it’s adjusting to the player you’re with. And I think both those guys are starting to feel their way through with Spoons [Ryan Spooner] and doing better all the time.

On the goaltenders and if they’ll have another chance to play…
I can’t guarantee you anything right now but we’re still in the stages of assessing those guys in the hunt for it. So pretty good chance you’re going to see them again.

On if Tuukka Rask will play soon…
He’ll play, yeah he’ll play at some point. He’s done well so far; he’s in good shape. We’ll get him some games.

On what he’s seeing from Torey Krug besides being in good shape and his maturity…
I think you pretty well summed it up. He’s just got some experience, which gives him some more confidence. And you know again, he’s coming into his third full season here. He’s going to want to come in and do even more. When I say more…better, I should’ve said better instead of the word more. But he’s got a lot of confidence. He’s eager to play against people that are bigger than him and he’s doing well in that area also and that comes with, like you said, with some experience there. So he’s an important part of our back end there so I’m glad to see he’s doing well and came in in good shape.

On if there are any players that have shown more than what he expected from them…
You know it’s unfortunate that when you’ve got that many players and you’re dealing with names all the time it’s hard for me to kind of assess that. But I mean when you talk about young [Brandon] Carlo who, you know, where he’s come in and I think he’s… you see there’s some, you know, some…there’s still a young player in that body. And there’s still some things he has to learn, but he’s really impressed me anyways. He impressed me at the summer camp here at development camp and right now I think he’s handled himself well. And you know for a young guy like that to be put in a position of going down to five just a few minutes into the game and having to, you know, get probably the minutes, you know, he gets in the juniors it was probably a big boost as far as experience wise for him was concerned. I thought he handled himself well. But there’s I mean, you know, you look at the [Austin] Czarniks that, you know, nobody talked about much before camp. You know [Frank] Vatrano…those guys had a good Rookie Tournament. They come in here and I thought they did well yesterday. And like I said I’m going to forget somebody but there’s a lot of guys that impressed me. That’s probably why we still have some decent numbers here at this stage.

On if he’ll do anything different on the ice this season…
No. I think we were pretty clear when we talked about you know…we’re not going to change, you know, our whole game here. We’re going to tweak it and you know the defensive part of our game has been a pretty good strength. It’s been pretty consistent over all, year after year. And I think right now, you know, we look to try and produce a little bit more and how can we create more scoring chances and so on so forth. So you know, like I said, we’ve kind of encouraged our Ds to support at the right time. It’s when we cross the blue line in the offensive zone it’s not just a three man hopefully you’ve got four guys there you’ve got more options and with some of those kinds of things. And maybe better puck support so that we can have the puck more on our sticks. But there’s not huge things. You could see the pace yesterday I thought was good, you know, and we talked about increasing our pace. We just got to make sure that those kind of things continue to go in the right direction.

On if there will be any changes behind the blue line…
No, I think everybody from coaching staff to players to upper management, everybody seems happy with the way we’ve been defending. So you know we just have to work on some areas there that we feel we need to improve in order for us to be more effective.
