General Manager Peter Chiarelli Post-Awards Media Availability

On Patrice Bergeron being recognized across the league…

It’s just the next step I think in the maturation process for him, individually and the way he plays. We just came from Vancouver for the Olympic stuff and he was such an important player there. Again, kind of started off in an underrated way but ended up in the top line. I don’t know how many awards he’s won, like two or three. But the Selke – the Selke Award, that’s the award – I mean there were some good players that were finalists. I mean, [Jonathan] Toews and [Anze] Kopitar, those guys are tremendous, tremendous players. Tremendous without the puck – you hear me talk about Bergy [Patrice Bergeron] without the puck and all that. These guys are great players. But he had a real terrific year. And clutch – offensively he’s getting better and he’s, I feel he’s still in his prime and he has many years to come. It was good, it was a good day for Bergy [Patrice Bergeron], I’m happy for him.

On have a Vezina winner three out of the last six years…
Well you hear what the players say, other players and our players. When they go up to accept the award, they talk about their team and that applies to us. We have a very selfless identify, that the guys have each other’s backs, how they play, how they play without the puck, how they defend. We’ve got two of maybe the top five or six defensive players, goalies and skaters included, in Zee [Zdeno Chara] and Tuukka [Rask]. We’ve got a really good coach who shows you can coach defense and offense. So it speak a lot, it speaks volumes about the team but at the end of the day, it’s great to hear them talk about the team and that type of attitude helps you win cups and win championships. So it’s nice to see them be recognized here for their individual efforts. Tuukka [Rask] was quite nervous, it was actually pretty comical, but we’ve all seen him in nets and how ice cool he is. So let him be nervous here and we’ll get back to the season and get back to normal.

On if it helps the culture when the “important” guys are selfless…
You know, it’s consistent, it’s rewarding for the organization when these guys get these awards. You look at how the Kings won, they’ve got a lot of the same stuff and I applaud Dean [Lombardi] and his group and Darryl [Sutter]. They’ve got some selfless guys that want to win and we’re the same way. And we try to find those players, we try to coach those players and develop those players. So Tuukka [Rask], Bergy [Patrice Bergeron], Zee [Zdeno Chara], you’ve talked to them over the years. They are the three of the most humble guys that you’ll know.

On how much he appreciates them getting recognition…
So, Bergy [Patrice Bergeron], he’s carved his niche as kind of a two way forward and sometimes they fall through the cracks when it comes time for media recognition. He’s obviously coming to the forefront so I feel good for him, he deserves it. Zee [Zdeno Chara], he’s a defensive defenseman at heart. He pouts up good numbers but sometimes he doesn’t get the credit he deserves despite all the accolades he’s received based on the sheer impact he has on the game. So it would have been nice to see the hat trick tonight but I told Zee [Zdeno Chara], don’t worry, you’ll get your shot at another one. And then of course, Tuukka [Rask] is still young like Bergy [Patrice Bergeron] and it’s good to see him get the credit and it’s good to know that we have him under contract for a while.

On how well rounded the team is…
Well, it says a lot. It would have been nice to win the Cup also and get that. I mean, it makes you feel good for a day, it makes you feel good for a week. I’m glad these guys get the honor and the credit and they deserve it. I do know that with these three guys, they’ll get back to work in September and they’ll want to win the Cup again and they’ll turn the page pretty quickly. This day is nice, the summer, they can step back and just enjoy these accolades. So I feel good for the guys.

On if he’ll get a little rest before the Draft…
Nope, nope, nope. Hitting the road tonight, back to Philly and meeting with our pro and amateur group. The next two or three weeks is important. You know, I was just talking to Bobby Murray, he’s on the red eye tonight to so we’ve got to get back to work.
