Boston, MA - Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference has partnered with the charitable organization Good Sports and Nike to donate 160 pairs of basketball sneakers to the Revere Police Activities League (PAL) Basketball League. Ference will visit the Irene O’Connell Center in Revere on Friday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. ET to make the donation.
The sneakers are being paid for by a portion of Ference’s Nike endorsement product allotment.
“As a professional athlete, I know first hand how powerful sports can be in children’s lives. I am proud to partner with Good Sports because I think that they are a perfect example of a local initiative that enables children to participate in sports,” said Ference. “I also feel fortunate to work with a company like Nike who understands my values, and can help me make an impact on my local community.”
Good Sports, a Boston-based non-profit organization, aims to increase youth participation in sports by donating equipment to community organizations serving disadvantaged youth. Good Sports chose the Revere PAL Basketball League as the grant recipient because a number of the program’s participants play in worn-out sneakers or work shoes, putting them at risk for injury. In addition, there are a number of young people who choose not to play at all because they do not have the proper footwear.
Ference, who is a firm believer in protecting the environment, has received a donation of two vehicles from Zipcar to assist in the delivery, cutting down on the excessive gas emissions that would have resulted from using a truck.
