Chiarelli is Team Canada's Assistant GM for 2012 Worlds

by John Bishop / Boston Bruins -- Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli has been named to Team Canada's 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship management team for the upcoming games to be held in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland from May 4-17.

Chiarelli will act as Team Canada's assistant GM for the tournament. Also added to the team's tournament management team will be Team Canada General Manager Kevin Lowe (Edmonton Oilers) and Team Canada Assistant GM Dave Nonis (Toronto Maple Leafs).

Canada's National Team's Executive Director Steve Yzerman (Tampa Bay Lightning), who managed Canada to gold at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, was announced as part of Canada's National Men's Team management group (through 2013-14), which also includes Doug Armstrong (St. Louis Blues), Ken Holland (Detroit Red Wings), Bob Nicholson (Hockey Canada), Brad Pascall (Hockey Canada) and Lowe.

"In my discussions with Bob [Nicholson] and getting organized, prepared for the Worlds and the Olympics, I wanted to bring back the same group that I had worked with at the Olympics and also Hockey Canada wanted to bring in the best minds and most successful people in the game to expand their relationships, give other people opportunities in the program," said Yzerman when asked how Hockey Canada's management group was put together. "Dave Nonis worked with Hockey Canada last year at the Worlds, and obviously Peter’s success with the Bruins in his career, it’s another opportunity for Hockey Canada and ourselves all to bring in another very successful person with a great hockey background and great knowledge to the program."

“I am very pleased with the group that we have assembled to lead us through the next two seasons,” said Nicholson, Hockey Canada president and CEO. “Steve, Doug, Ken and Kevin provide a great deal of experience gained from their involvement in 2010 and their long-time involvement with our program. Brad has been with Hockey Canada since 1998 and brings a wealth of international experience to the group, having led Canada at the IIHF World Championship, IIHF World Women’s Championship and IIHF World Junior Championship.

"Peter and Dave have great experience as well that will benefit the group as we prepare for this year’s world championship."

For his part, Chiarelli was excited for the opportunity to represent his home country and help prepare Team Canada for a successful World Championship run.

"It’s obviously an honor for me be part of this group and to help Kevin out with the Worlds," said Chiarelli. "The bar is set high here, as it is in Boston and we expect to win."
