Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney
announced today, March 29, that the team has signed Yale University defenseman Rob O'Gara
to a two-year entry-level contract beginning with the 2016-17 season. Sweeney also announced the team has agreed to terms with Miami University (Ohio) forward Sean Kuraly
on an entry-level contract beginning with the 2016-17 season. Both Kuraly and O'Gara will join the Providence Bruins on Amateur Tryout Agreements (ATO) for the remainder of the 2015-16 season.
"We are excited to have Rob O'Gara and Sean Kuraly join the Bruins organization," said Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney. "They were outstanding college players and both young men have tremendous character and leadership qualities."
Kuraly served as captain at Miami University (Ohio) in 2015-16, posting six goals and 17 assists for 23 points in 36 games. The 6’2”, 205-pound forward recorded a career high in goals and tied a career high in points during the 2014-15 season with the RedHawks, scoring 19 goals and adding 10 assists for 29 points in 40 games. Over his four-year collegiate career, Kuraly skated in 154 games, producing 43 goals and 50 assists for 93 points with 177 penalty minutes.
Prior to attending Miami University (Ohio), Kuraly played with the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League (USHL) from 2009-12. In 110 career games with the Ice, the 23-year-old tallied 41 goals and 61 assists for 102 points with 93 penalty minutes and a plus-17 rating.
Kuraly was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (133th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Dublin, Ohio native was acquired by the Bruins, along with a 2016 first-round draft pick, in a trade with San Jose in exchange for goaltender Martin Jones on June 30, 2015.
O’Gara, 22, finished up his 2015-16 season at Yale with four goals and eight assists for 12 points with 41 penalty minutes in 30 appearances. The 6’4”, 207-pound defenseman recorded a career high in points in 2014-15 for the Bulldogs, scoring six goals and adding a team-high 15 assists for 21 points with 31 penalty minutes and a plus-15 rating. He also earned first-team AHCA/CCM All America and first-team All-ECAC honors. O’Gara played in all 37 games as a freshman in 2012-13, recording seven assists as he helped Yale capture the 2013 National Championship.
Prior to attending Yale, O’Gara played hockey at Milton (MA) Academy, where he served as a senior captain in 2011-12, recording five goals and 20 assists for 25 points in 24 games.
The Massapequa, New York native was drafted by the Bruins in the fifth round (151st overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
