NEW YORK, NY – The SportsBusiness Journal held their 5th annual 2012 Sports Business Awards on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square in New York City to celebrate excellence in sports business. The Boston Bruins were presented with the Sports Team of the Year Award for their excellence and outstanding achievements for the time period from March 1, 2011 through February 29, 2012.
Each year, the award honors one sports franchise based on an evaluation of "excellence, growth, creativity, innovation, sound planning, implementation and outcomes." A panel of editors, writers and researchers from the SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily judged entries.
The Boston Bruins were acknowledged for their 2011 Stanley Cup Championship title, as well as their involvement in numerous charitable contributions to the Greater Boston community.
After their first Stanley Cup Championship win in 39 years, the Bruins continued to increase the profile of the Bruins brand and saw record growth in revenue of ticket sales, retail sales, and corporate sponsorship. The organization also increased its online presence with the 2012 launch of the Bruins "Digital Entertainment Network" (DEN), an initiative that bundles all of the team's digital, mobile and social assets and delivers original content to over 2.5 million fans per month.
Off the ice, the Boston Bruins took part in various volunteer efforts throughout the community including programs in youth hockey, military support through over 40 in-game "8-Spoked Salutes" and a Military Appreciation Night, regular visits to five local hospitals, and participation in charitable efforts through the Boston Bruins Foundation. The Foundation reached record heights in fundraising in 2012 and donated $1.6 million to various charities through grants and in-game fundraising.
These numerous team accomplishments helped secure the Bruins place as the SportsBusiness Journal's 'Sports Team of the Year' award recipient. The Bruins were nominated alongside the Dayton Dragons, Sporting Kansas City, Stewart-Haas Racing, and the Texas Rangers for the award.
