B's Host Summer Reading Program

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins
BOSTON, MA -The Boston Bruins, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) have teamed up to create a fun and creative summer reading program, “When You Read, You Score.”  The program encourages children to read a variety of books over the summer - including those recommended by current Bruins Milan Lucic, Mark Recchi, Michael Ryder, Mark Stuart, Tim Thomas and Aaron Ward - and offers participants the chance to win various Boston Bruins prizes. Once signed up, participants in the program will be given the opportunity to choose what they want to read, track their progress online as well as write on-line book reviews.

The “When You Read, You Score” program has an “outer space” theme, dubbed the Starship Adventures. To help launch the program, astronaut and Cohasset, MA native, Steve Bowen will be reading to children on Friday, July 24, from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the John Curtis Free Library (534 Hanover  Street, Hanover, MA  02339-2228). Bowen participated in a ceremonial puck drop at the Bruins/Panthers game on February 24, 2009 by dropping a puck that was taken into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2007.

Some of the Bruins players recommendations for the program include: “Where the Wild Things Are” (recommended by Tim Thomas), “To Kill a Mockingbird” (Mark Stuart), “Green Eggs and Ham” (Milan Lucic), “Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat (Michael Ryder), “Brady Brady Hockey Book Series” (Mark Recchi), and “Where the Sidewalk Ends” (Aaron Ward).

In addition, the Bruins will host five events throughout the summer, the first being Friday, July 24, at local libraries throughout Massachusetts featuring various Bruins players, coaches/management, alumni, and/or the Bruins mascot, Blades.  At each event, various autographed items will be raffled to keep readers enthused.

Each child who completes the program will receive a Boston Bruins bookmark and certificate. One Grand-Prize winner will be chosen from a pool of participants who excelled in the program and will be awarded the Original 6 Experience, VIP package, which includes parking, 4 tickets, bench assistant for one child between the ages of 6-12, a family high-five, a Zamboni ride (must be 12 or older) and a postgame meet and greet.

Along with the Grand-Prize Winner, nine regional winners will be chosen.  One prize pack will be given to each region and some outstanding volunteers. Prizes include autographed Patrice Bergeron jerseys, player autographed mini-sticks, and autographed Tim Thomas pucks.
