Bruins Week Ahead: 4/20-4/25

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins

BEHIND THE B POSTSEASON: The Boston Bruins announced that the team will continue to release episodes of “Behind the B” presented by Alex and Ani throughout the team's 2014 Stanley Cup playoff run. There will be one episode for each round the Bruins play in with air dates and times on NESN confirmed once the respective series concludes. Each episode will be narrated by actor and Worcester, MA native Denis Leary.  The first episode will document the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal matchup between the Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings.

FACT OF THE WEEK: Reilly Smith faced his brother, Brendan Smith, on Friday evening, becoming the sixth Bruin in face a sibling in a playoff series and the first since Phil (Boston) and Tony (Chicago) Esposito faced in the 1975 Preliminary Series.

STAT OF THE WEEK: Seven players played in their first NHL postseason game on Friday night’s contest against the Red Wings – Boston’s Corey Potter, Reilly Smith and Justin Florek and Detroit’s Riley Sheehan, Tomas Tartar, Tomas Jurco and Luke Glendening all skated in their first playoff action.

CAMPBELL NOMINTATED FOR MASTERTON: Bruins forward Gregory Campbell has been selected as the Boston Bruins 2014 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominee by the Boston Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer's Association (PHWA). The Masterton Trophy is given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Campbell battled adversity entering the 2014 campaign, coming off a broken leg sustained in the second period of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Despite breaking his leg in a shorthanded situation, Campbell remained on the ice for the remaining 47 seconds of Penguin power play time, putting the team ahead of his own personal health, to help the Bruins kill off the penalty unscathed.

“Gregory Campbell’s entire hockey career has been about perseverance, dedication to hockey and paying the highest level of respect to the game he loves so much," said Joe Haggerty, PHWA Boston chapter chairman and Bruins beat reporter for  "The image of Campbell gritting his way through excruciating pain to finish a penalty kill shift with a broken leg during last year’s conference final is one nobody will soon forget. It’s also the perfect example of Campbell’s dedication to his team, selflessness and willingness to give every last ounce he has to fully compete. That doesn't even include Campbell's heavy involvement in the community, including delivering pies to Boston homeless shelters on Thanksgiving morning each year. The Boston Chapter of the PHWA is proud to nominate Gregory Campbell for this season’s Masterton Trophy.”

Campbell, a staple on the Bruins’ energy line, has had a productive season for the Black & Gold registering eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points, appearing in all of the B’s 82 games this season.  The Boston Bruins acquired Campbell on June 22, 2010 with Nathan Horton for Dennis Wideman, a 2010 first round draft and a 2011 third round draft pick. The winner of the Masterton Trophy is selected by a vote of the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the conclusion of the regular season.
