THE BOSTON BRUINS WEEK AHEAD MARCH 8 – 14
THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS…
STATS & NOTES YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING…
FIGHT CLUB: In Tuesday’s game against the Florida Panthers on March 4, Shawn Thornton recorded his 100th regular season fight as a Boston Bruin. He took up arms with Florida’s Krys Barch, which marked his eighth fight with the Florida winger, and tied the most times he’s dropped the gloves with one player. The Bruins Bruiser also has eight career fights with Islander’s Eric Boulton.
TUUKKA TIME: Tuukka Rask now leads the league in shutouts after he recorded his 6th shutout of the season in the Thursday, March 6 win against the Capitals (10/19 vs. Tampa Bay Lightning, 11/11 vs. Tampa Bay Lightning, 12/17 vs. Calgary Flames, 12/27 vs. Ottawa Senators, 1/11 vs. San Jose Sharks). Six shutouts is a career season high for the Bruins netminder. Entering the weekend, Rask ranks seventh in the NHL in GAA at 2.13 and fifth in save percentage at .928.
HOT SOUP: Gregory Campbell has been hot of late, recording four goals in the last four games. Campbell notched two goals New York Rangers on Sunday, March 2, including the game winner. That was the first time this season the forward has scored two goals in one game, with the last time being on April 10, 2013 in a 5-4 win against the New Jersey Devils.
BERGERON SELKE RESUME: After earning the Selke Trophy in 2011-12 and being a finalist for the Selke in last year’s campaign, Patrice Bergeron has continued his strong two-way play into the 2013-14 season. Often playing against the opposition’s top line and serving as one of the primary forwards on the PK, Bergeron enters the weekend tied for third in the NHL with a plus-8 rating. The centerman currently ranks second in the league in faceoff percentage at 59.5% and leads the league in faceoff wins with 797, ahead of Sidney Crosby who has 781. The 28-year-old forward has had a 60.1% faceoff proficiency since the start of the 2011-12 season, which leads the NHL over the span. Bergeron also ranks fifth on the Bruins in points (40) and fifth in goals (17).
