THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS…
STATS & NOTES YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING…
IGINLA ROLLING THROUGH MILESTONES: On March 17 against the Minnesota Wild, Jarome Iginla played in his 1300th career NHL game. Iginla scored twice in the contest, bringing him one shy of tying Boston’s own coordinator Johnny Bucyk in all-time goals. On March 18 against the New Jersey Devils, the forward scored in his fourth consecutive game to tie Bucyk for the 25th spot on the all-time goal scorer list with 556 goals. Iginla recorded 525 goals with the Calgary Flames (1996-2013), five with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2012-13) and currently leads the Bruins with 26 (2013-14).
20-PLUS GOAL CLUB: The Bruins added to their list of 20+ goal scorers on March 18 when Patrice Bergeron netted his 20th goal of the season against the New Jersey Devils. That brings the Bruins list of 20+ goal scorers to four (Jarome Iginla 26, Brad Marchand 22, Milan Lucic 21) with Reilly Smith trailing by one with 19 goals. The Bruins join the four other teams in the NHL that have four or more 20+ goal scorers on its team: Chicago Blackhawks (Patrick Kane 29, Patrick Sharp 29, Jonathan Toews 27, Marian Hossa 25), Colorado Avalanche (Ryan O’Reilly 26, Nathan MacKinnon 23, Matt Duchene 22, Gabriel Landeskog 21, Paul Stastny 20) Pittsburgh Penguins (Sidney Crosby 33, Chris Kunitz 32, James Neal 22, Evgeni Malkin 21) and St. Louis Blues (Alexander Steen 30, David Backes 23, Jaden Schwartz 21, Vladimir Tarasenko 21).
TEN IN A ROW: With a victory over the New Jersey Devils on March 18, the Bruins extended their win streak to 10 consecutive games. The 10-game streak is their longest such stretch since the Black & Gold won 10 in a row from November 1 - 23 in 2011.
KRUG MAKING HIS-TOREY: On March 15 against the Carolina Hurricanes, Torey Krug notched his 14th goal of the season, putting him third on the club's all-time list of goals by a rookie defenseman (Ray Bourque, 17; Greg Hawgood, 16). Krug enters the weekend leading all rookie defensemen in points (37), goals (14) and assists (23), while his plus-14 rating ranks third.
STAYING POSITIVE: Entering Friday, the Bruins own four of the top ten spots in plus/minus rating with Patrice Bergeron leading the league at plus-34. Second in the league is teammate David Krejci at plus-33, with Jarome Iginla and Johnny Boychuk not far behind in fourth place with a plus-30 rating (Brent Seabrook, CHI)… Boston’s plus-74 GF/GA differential is tops in the league.
BERGERON SELKE RESUME: After earning the Selke Trophy in 2011-12 and being a finalist for the Selke in last year’s campaign, Patrice Bergeron has continued his strong two-way play into the 2013-14 season. Often playing against the opposition’s top line and serving as one of the primary forwards on the PK, Bergeron enters the weekend tied for third in the NHL with a plus-34 rating. The centerman currently is tied for second in the league in faceoff percentage at 58.9% (Manny Malhotra, Carolina) and leads the league in faceoff wins with 876, ahead of Sidney Crosby who has 865. The 28-year-old forward has had a 59.8% faceoff proficiency since the start of the 2011-12 season, which leads the NHL over the span. Bergeron also ranks fourth on the Bruins in points (48) and fourth in goals (20).
