BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed Assistant General Manager Jim Benning to a multi-year contract extension.

Benning is in his fourth season with the Bruins and his third as the club’s Assistant General Manager, as he was named to that post on July 14, 2007. He serves as an advisor to Chiarelli on all matters pertaining to hockey operations, player evaluation, trades and free agent signings. Benning joined the Bruins in 2006 as the team’s Director of Player Personnel and held that position for one season before being promoted to his current post.

“Jim plays a critical role in our management group,” said Chiarelli. “He takes a very aggressive and proactive approach in his recommendations and assessments underscoring his tremendous management ability and experience.  His player evaluation is amongst the tops in the industry and his business acumen supplements our group greatly.  We were very fortunate as an organization to hire him in 2006 and we are even more fortunate to secure him for the long term.”

Benning came to the Bruins after 12 seasons in the Buffalo Sabres organization including eight seasons as the team’s Director of Amateur Scouting. In that position, he oversaw the club’s scouting staff, led the team at the annual NHL Entry Draft and scouted prospects at the high school, college, and junior hockey levels as well as in Europe.

A former defenseman, Benning was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round (6th overall) of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He played nine seasons in the NHL with the Leafs and Vancouver Canucks and played one season in Europe before retiring as a player in 1992. He then attended college for one year before joining the Anaheim organization as an amateur scout.

The Bruins open their 2009-10 campaign Thursday night when they host the Washington Capitals at the TD Garden at 7:00 p.m. (TV: Versus, RADIO: 98.5 FM The Sports Hub).
