Bruins Prospects to Compete During National Junior Evaluation Camps

by Caryn Switaj / Boston Bruins

BostonBruins.com — Six Bruins prospects will be competing for their respective countries this week during summer National Junior Team evaluation camps.

The camps serve as auditions for players seeking to make their respective squads that will strive for gold at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto, Canada, from Dec. 26, 2016 through Jan. 5, 2017.

Three of Boston’s 2016 draft picks, defenseman Charlie McAvoy, forward Trent Frederic and defenseman Ryan Lindgren, are among the 42 players at USA Hockey’s camp, which takes place through Aug. 6 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich.

The week includes daily practices, as well as exhibition games. For the first part of camp, the U.S. camp will be separated into two squads, with McAvoy on USA Blue, and Frederic and Lindgren on USA White. On Aug. 2, the roster will be trimmed and a single U.S. squad will finish the camp with practices and games against Canada, Finland and Sweden at USA Hockey Arena.

2015 draft picks, defenseman Jeremy Lauzon and forward Zach Senyshyn are on Canada’s roster, while 2016 draft pick, forward Oskar Steen, is on Sweden’s roster.

Altogether, the prospects reflect three first round selections (McAvoy - 14th overall, 2016, Frederic - 29th overall, 2016; Senyshyn - 15th overall, 2015), two second round selections (Lauzon - 52nd overall, 2015; Lindgren - 49th overall, 2016), and a sixth round selection (Steen - 165th overall, 2016).

Frederic and Lindgren will both have a homecoming of sorts at USA Hockey Arena, as they both competed there in 2015-16 for the U.S. National Under-18 Team, which calls the rink home. McAvoy competed for the team two years ago, prior to attending Boston University.

The prospects were recently together at the 10th annual Boston Bruins Development Camp, held around Boston in mid-July.

All games during the week will be streamed live via USAHockey.FASTHockey.com. (*Update as of Aug. 1: the final six games will be televisted on NHL Network in the U.S.)
