BOSTON - Just when the Bruins thought they were back to full strength, the injury bug has once again infiltrated the dressing room.
Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said on Friday afternoon that Charlie McAvoy - who missed Thursday's game with New Jersey - has been placed on injured reserve and will sit out again on Saturday night in Buffalo with a lower-body injury. Brad Marchand also missed Friday's practice at Warrior Ice Arena with what Cassidy termed as an upper-body injury.

Both players traveled with the team and have not been ruled out of the Winter Classic against Chicago on New Year's Day.
Marchand was feeling ill (upset stomach) prior to Thursday's tilt with the Devils and later left the game in the final minutes after a taking a hit from Travis Zajac.
"Wasn't feeling well today again," said Cassidy. "We'll have a much better idea on him [Saturday]. Doesn't look likely for [Buffalo], would be my guess, but he's traveling with us."

Cassidy gives updates on Marchand, McAvoy

McAvoy has been hampered by the lingering effects of a blocked shot and was placed on injured reserve retroactively after the B's loss in Carolina on Dec. 23. According to Cassidy, McAvoy is eligible to be activated on Monday, the day before the Winter Classic.
"McAvoy's traveling," said Cassidy. "There is ice in Notre Dame, outdoors and indoors. He'll have the chance to get back on skates. I can't tell you what day that will be."
Despite what seems to be an everlasting string of injuries and ailments, Torey Krug said the Bruins are keeping their focus on the ice and trying not to be discouraged by things that are out of their control.
"It's as frustrated as you want to be," said Krug. "These are things that happen throughout the course of a season. I've been in this league long enough to realize that stuff happens. More often than not, teams are playing at less than full strength.
"We've done a great job up to this point. Guys that have come in have done a valiant job of picking up roster spots and added minutes and added responsibly. These things don't change….we'll try to just do our job."

Backes Has Hearing

The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced on Friday that David Backes would have a hearing for his illegal check to the head on New Jersey's Blake Coleman. Backes, who received a minor penalty for the hit, was suspended three games last March for an elbow on Detroit's Frans Nielsen.
"It was all shoulder. Unfortunately, there looked like there was enough contact to the head that they're gonna review it," said Cassidy. "From there, it's anybody's guess…I know he was suspended [last year], so that doesn't help matters when you're reviewing.
"But at the end of the day, you're never quite sure how those things will play out. We'll have an idea later obviously and go from there."
Should the Bruins be without Backes and Marchand on Saturday night in Buffalo, Cassidy will have some line juggling to do, which could mean shifting both Sean Kuraly and Noel Acciari to the wing, with Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Colby Cave in the middle.
"JFK's here. It's not as easy just dropping him into the right wing spot because I'm not aware that he's played right wing at all in pro hockey. Doesn't mean he hasn't in the past," said Cassidy. "How the lines would shake out - give me a day on that, I'll let you know [Saturday] morning."
Cassidy also said the Bruins could turn to Providence, indicating that Anders Bjork could be a possibility to return to the big club just in time for the Winter Classic at his alma mater, Notre Dame. Bjork has 10 points (goal, nine assists) in 10 games since being assigned to the P-Bruins in late November.
"It's an interesting story, playing there," said Cassidy. "He's played well in Providence, hasn't scored as much as we'd like, but he's putting up points. So he's generating offense…but he would be one of the guys in the mix.
"I don't want to get ahead of ourselves because there would have to be a conversation of who's the best fit for us, who's playing the best down there now."

Turning Up the Heat

After back-to-back disappointing defeats at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils, Cassidy put his players through the paces on Friday morning. It was a practice that included a number of battle-type drills and plenty of intensity.
"We didn't battle nearly enough yesterday…our execution was off," said Cassidy. "That's sometimes the way it goes. Other times we just need to bear down and focus. I think there's a little bit of both. They got scruffy at times, too, Jersey.
"Today, more of the focus was on, 'Let's be crisp and let's be competing for pucks.' Whether they got that message or not, I don't know. Hopefully it shows tomorrow and we're gonna be a harder team."

Goaltending Schedule

Cassidy confirmed that Tuukka Rask will be between the pipes on Saturday night in Buffalo. His plan for who starts the Winter Classic on Tuesday has not yet been determined.

Rapid Response

For Game No. 39 on the schedule, Saturday night's tilt with Buffalo means plenty for the Bruins. They'll be looking to snap their two-game skid ahead of the Winter Classic, while also attempting to keep pace with the Sabres, who are directly ahead of them in the Atlantic Division standings.
Buffalo sits 3 points in front of the Bruins for the third spot in the division. The teams split the first two meetings of the season, with the Sabres taking the most recent matchup, a 4-2 win at TD Garden on Dec. 16.
"Buffalo came in here and beat us last time," said Jake DeBrusk. "We're fighting with them right now, so it's one of those games where it's a 4-point game and it's very important.
"We're gonna have to have a good start. Today, we focused on battle drills and the kind of stuff we were lacking [Thursday] and hopefully that translates tomorrow night because they're gonna be ready to play."
