Bruins Alternate Captain Patrice Bergeron Named A Finalist For The 2016 Frank J. Selke Trophy

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins
BOSTON, MA – The NHL announced today, April 28, that Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron is a finalist for the 2016 Frank J. Selke Trophy. The Selke Trophy is awarded annually "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game". The other two finalists are Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Kesler and Los Angeles Kings forward Anze Kopitar.

“Being named a finalist for the Selke Trophy is a tremendous honor and one I am very grateful for,” said Bergeron. “While it is an individual award, my teammates and coaches deserve a lot of credit as well. Ryan and Anze are two elite players who both had great seasons and it is a privilege to be a finalist alongside them. Thanks to all of those who voted and I look forward to the NHL Awards Show on June 22.”

Bergeron has won the Selke Trophy three times (2012, 2014 and 2015) and has now been a Selke finalist in each of the last five seasons. His three Selke Trophy wins are tied for the second most in NHL history, one behind Bob Gainey who is the all-time leader with four.

Bergeron finished the 2015-16 regular season leading the NHL in faceoffs taken (1,978) and faceoffs won (1,130) and was seventh overall with a 57.1% faceoff win rate (among players taking a minimum of 500 faceoffs). Bergeron has now completed back-to-back seasons leading the league in total faceoff wins with this year's 1,130 and last year's 1,175.

Half of Bergeron’s goals (16 out of 32) gave the Bruins a lead in a game, including eight first goals of the game and another three of his goals served as game-tying goals.

The 30-year-old led the Bruins in point-production with a 68-point output, including 32 goals (second on the team) and 36 assists (tied for third on team). Bergeron also led the team in shots with 282. He represented the Bruins for the second consecutive season at the 2016 NHL All-Star Game in Nashville, TN.

Members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association submitted ballots for the Selke Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists.
