Bruin Week Ahead: February 9-15

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins

BRUINS/LIGHTNING GAME POSTPONED: The NHL announced today (February 9) that tonight’s game between the Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning has been postponed due to the continuing, weather-related State of Emergency that remains in effect in Boston. A make-up date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed. Although both Clubs and the assigned on-ice officials are in Boston, travel conditions remain too hazardous for fans, security personnel and TD Garden staff to get to the arena.

UPCOMING PRACTICE SCHEDULE: The Bruins upcoming practice and game schedule for February 10 - 15 can be found at the end of the Week Ahead.

PATRICE BERGERON AND ANDREW FERENCE TO VISIT MASS GENERAL HOSPITAL: Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron and Andrew Ference will be visiting patients at Mass General Hospital (55 Fruit St., Boston) on Wednesday, February 13, where they will sign autographs and take photos while they deliver Bruins goodie bags to the patients.

INJURY/LINEUP UPDATES: All of the Bruins were on the ice for practice at TD Garden on Friday, February 8 for the first time together in a while, with Shawn Thornton, Daniel Paille and Brad Marchand cleared to practice this week. All three had not yet heard if they had been cleared for games and are considered “day-to-day.” As for how the conditions of the three B’s will affect the lineup, Head Coach Claude Julien updated media postpractice on the situation.

“I think I can honestly tell you that I’m not 100 percent on those lines right now," said Julien. "There could be some changes. There are players that we’re going to have to make decisions on, for sure, tomorrow, in or out, so those could change."

UPDATED MOBILE APP: The Boston Bruins mobile app has been updated for the 2012-13 season, with a sleek, all-new design and the following improvements: revised user interface and menu navigation for ease of use; revamped in-game section with larger display area; integration with Bruins Instagram photos and fan photos tagged with #NHLBruins; access to the Bruins official Twitter feed @NHLBruins with one-tap connection to a personal account; TD Garden concourse map with concession listings and locations; increased personal preference settings for in-game and team app alerts, additional sounds and wallpapers, and improved social sharing. The app can be downloaded via iPhone or Android phones.

HISTORIC START: The Bruins have matched the best nine-game start in franchise history with 15 points. They also reached that total in the 1970-71 and 1992-93 seasons. A win tonight would give Boston the best ten-game start in club history, besting the 16 of possible 20 points they have amassed in four previous seasons (most recently in 1978-79).

MAGIC NUMBER TWO: The Bruins are 4-0-0 this season in games in which they have scored two goals or less and are 6-0-0 in games in which they have held their opponent to two goals or fewer.

SERIES SWEEPS: The Tampa Bay Lightning are one of only three teams (Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers) who have never swept Boston in a season series, while the Buffalo Sabres are the only team that the Bruins have never swept.

The Bruins will travel to Buffalo Saturday night to face off against the Sabres at the First Niagara Center on Sunday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The game is no longer a back-to-back, with Saturday’s game against the Lightning postponed to a later date.

The B’s will then return home for a matchup on Tuesday, February 12 at the TD Garden against the New York Rangers at 7:30 p.m. ET, before heading back to Buffalo to play the Sabres again on Friday, February 15 at the First Niagara Center at 7:00 p.m.

BROADCAST SCHEDULE: Jack Edwards, Andy Brickley and Naoko Funayama will cover all of this week’s games on NESN, with coverage for Tuesday’s game against the Rangers also on NBC Sports Network. The tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle all radio duties on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Start times for the upcoming games are as follows:

2/9 vs. Tampa Bay Lightning, 7:00 p.m. ET – NESN
2/10 at Buffalo Sabres, 7:00 p.m. ET – NESN
2/12 vs. New York Rangers, 7:30 p.m. ET – NESN, NBC Sports Network
2/15 at Buffalo Sabres, 7:00 p.m. ET – NESN

THIRD JERSEY SHOOTOUT LUCK: The Bruins will suit up in their third jerseys for five more games this season at the TD Garden – all against different opponents. Boston has already worn the jerseys twice, with both amounting to shootout wins – first defeating Winnipeg 3-2 on January 21 and then taking a 2-1 shootout win from New Jersey on January 29.

2/12 vs. New York Rangers
3/2 vs. Tampa Bay
3/16 vs. Washington
4/8 vs. Carolina
4/19 vs. Pittsburgh

134 AND COUNTING: Following the home game on Thursday, January 31 at the TD Garden, the Bruins have sold out their last 134 home games, including regular season and playoffs. This sellout streak began more than three years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

The Boston media “Tweet of the Week” is in its fourth week of the 2012-13 season. So far, Fluto Shinzawa, DJ Bean and Jesse Connolly have taken top honors, and this week, Shinzawa earned his second TOTW this season, with a tweet sent as he was preparing for this past Wednesday’s game in Montreal…

@GlobeFluto: BOS-MTL roundtrip on Air Canada next week: $2139. And you thought Kessel trade was robbery.

Here is this week’s honorable mention:
@DanCagen: “The only thing missing from the Super Bowl blackout was Brad Marchand scoring a shootout goal.”

@DJ_Bean (DJ Bean,, Week 2
@JesseNEHJ (Jesse Connolly, New England Hockey Journal), Week 3

PREVIOUS PROSPECT REPORT SUMMARY: The Bruins Communications Staff sent out their eighth edition of the Boston Bruins Prospect Report on February 4. It can be viewed online at and on the Bruins Media Website. Children and their families receive goodie bags filled with Bruins memorabilia, a visit from the Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls, as well as a feature on the Garden HDX. After the game, Patrice’s Pals are escorted to ice level and introduced to Patrice himself who signs autographs and takes pictures with his Pals. This will take place at all Boston Bruins home games during the 2012-13 season.

SAVVY’S SUITE: Boston Bruins Forward Marc Savard has partnered with the Brain Injury Center at Children’s Hospital Boston, inviting children who suffer from the effects of Brain Trauma, both physically and psychologically, to attend a Bruins home game in his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags with Bruins memorabilia and a visit from Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls. Savard started the program on Thursday, January 12, 2012, and it will continue through the end of the 2013-14 Bruins season.
