Boston Bruins Week Ahead

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins

FERENCE FAMILY SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEEER: Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference, his wife Krista and their two daughters will be decorating holiday cookies for guests staying at the Pine Street Inn on Christmas Eve morning from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Founded in 1969, Pine Street Inn is the largest resource for homeless men and women in New England, providing permanent supportive housing, job training, emergency shelter and street outreach to over 1,300 homeless men and women each day.

PGA PUCK DROP: The PGA’s 2011 Rookie of the Year and New England native Keegan Bradley will drop the ceremonial puck before Friday’s game against the Panthers. Bradley’s rookie year on the tour was highlighted by two wins – including his first major title in the 2011 PGA Championship – and four top ten finishes. Bradley was born in Woodstock, VT but moved to Hopkinton, MA as a teenager and graduated from Hopkinton HS, where he won the Massachusetts Division 2 Individual State Golf Championship in 2004. He currently resides in Jupiter, FL.

“BEAR” ORNAMENT GIVEAWAY: The first 10,000 fans in attendance at the Bruins/Panthers game on Friday will receive a special holiday ornament featuring the popular “Bear.” The ornament features the Bear kissing the Stanley Cup under mistletoe.

UPCOMING GAMES: Division leaders clash Friday night as the Bruins host the Panthers at 7:00 p.m. at the TD Garden. Florida currently leads the Southeast Division with 43 points and are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa on Thursday night. The Cats are 2-2-3 in their last seven games. The Bruins meanwhile are 10-1-1 in their last 12 home games, with the lone loss coming against Florida on December 8.

Rich Peverley will not play in Friday’s game due to an undisclosed injury, Claude Julien announced during his morning press briefing.

When the Bruins return from their holiday break, the Black & Gold will head west for the week to face Western Conference foes Phoenix on Wednesday, December 28 and Dallas on Saturday, December 31. The meeting with Dallas will be the first time Stars forward Michael Ryder faces his former team since winning the Stanley Cup with the Bruins last season. As of Friday, Ryder had potted a team leading 12 goals on the year.

Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley will call all three games on NESN and the tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle the radio duties on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Start times for the games are as follows:

12/23 vs. FLA, 7:00 p.m. ET
12/28 at PHX, 9:00 p.m. ET
12/31 at DAL, 8:00 p.m. ET

103 AND COUNTING: Entering the Bruins/Panthers game on Friday, the Bruins have now sold out their last 103 home games at the TD Garden, including regular season and playoffs. This sellout streak began nearly two years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK: Matt Kalman from TheBruinsBlog answers back this week, tying the Boston Globe’s Fluto Shinzawa atop the TOTW leaderboard. Kalman and Shinzawa are the only multiple TOTW winners and are now two winning tweets clear of their competition. Kalman’s tweet came during the 6-0 Bruins win over the Flyers on Saturday:

@TheBruinsBlog: “After this, #HBO has to change name of show to 21/7 - #Flyers have taken 3 hours off”

And here are this week’s Honorable Mentions, in no particular order:

@DJ_Bean (DJ Bean, during the Bruins/Flyers game upon noticing the different Bruins line combinations: “So is Thornton telling Bergeron that he’s graduated to last year’s Merlot line?”

@JeffIsrael25 (Jeff Israel, ex of Fox25) commenting on what the Bruins win would mean to the Flyers victory song: “Bruins are doing something more important than winning: preventing Mac Miller from being played”

While this space usually isn’t reserved for calling anyone out, the TOTW committee has been wondering where @HacksWithHaggs has been this season on the TOTW leaderboard. After tying for the most winning tweets during the regular season last year and being considered one of the favorites to take the title this year, @HacksWithHaggs is currently mired in an 11 week drought without a winner. Some sources are speculating he is tweeting injured, others saying he lost a step. Either way, perhaps this will provide some motivation.

@GlobeFluto (Fluto Shinzawa, Boston Globe), 3 (Week 4, Week 5, Week 10)

The Bruins are 10-3-2 in their last 15 games against Florida with all five losses coming by Panthers shutouts.
