Boston Bruins Week Ahead

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins

BRUINS “STAND TOGETHER” AGAINST BULLYING FOR THE WALKER FAMILY ON FRIDAY’S EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION: Bruins President Cam Neely and players Patrice Bergeron, Andrew Ference, Milan Lucic, Tyler Seguin, and Shawn Thornton will appear on the Friday, December 2nd edition of Extreme Makeover Home Edition (ABC, 8:00 p.m.- 10:00 p.m.). The Extreme Makeover crew traveled to Springfield, MA to surprise the Walker family, who two years ago endured an unimaginable tragedy. On April 6th, 2009, 11-year-old Carl Walker took his own life in their Springfield home after being bullied at school.  The family still hasn’t been able to return to normal after this tragic event, but they have focused their energy on helping others by lobbying for new state and federal laws against bullying.

The Extreme Makeover crew built a brand new home for the Walker family, as the family understandably had difficultly living in the place where their son took his own life. One of the rooms in their new home is based around a Boston-sports theme and the Bruins contributed various items to help them decorate, including a replica 2011 Stanley Cup championship banner, signed jerseys, sticks and pucks.

The players joined thousands of others – including Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian – to “stand together” against bullying and show their support for the Walker family and their cause. The two-hour episode airs Friday night at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.

For more information and how to help the “Stand Together” campaign, check out a Bruins gallery and
FIVE IN EIGHT: The Northeast Division leading Bruins will play five games in eight days next week, beginning with Saturday night’s tilt against the Maple Leafs at the TD Garden. The Bruins have defeated Toronto in the three prior meetings this season, downing the Leafs by a combined score of 19-5.

The B’s will then have back-to-back road games in Pittsburgh and Winnipeg on Monday, December 5 and Tuesday, December 6. Pittsburgh currently leads the Eastern Conference with 34 points and are 4-1-1 since Sidney Crosby returned to the Pens lineup on Monday, November 21.

Boston returns home for a Thursday night matchup against the Florida Panthers before heading to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets on Saturday, December 10.

All games will be televised on NESN and can be heard on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Check for start times.

TRAVEL NOTE: There will not be any practice on Wednesday.

RATINGS CONTINUE TO SURGE: NESN set two regular season Boston Bruins ratings records in November: highest average monthly Bruins rating and single Bruins game all-time high.

During the month of November NESN averaged a 5.3 household (HH) rating, the highest average monthly Bruins rating in network history. The 5.3 rating is 33% better than the previous best monthly average of 4.0 recorded in March 2011. November featured five of the top seven rated regular season Bruins games in NESN history.

On Wednesday, November 23rd NESN garnered an 8.4 HH rating for the Bruins 3-2 shootout win at Buffalo, the best regular season game rating in the network’s 28 year history.

100 STRAIGHT: The Bruins expect to hit their 100th consecutive sellout this Saturday, December 3. In recognition of the 100th straight sellout, the Bruins will be thanking fans with a commemorative poster and through a display on Garden HDX. This sellout streak began nearly two years ago on December 5, 2009, coincidentally against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).

NHL, BRUINS HIT HIGH MERCHANDISE HIGHS: The NHL recorded a successful Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend with record sales at the NHL Powered by Reebok store in midtown New York City and online at NHL Winter Classic products were nine of the 10 top-selling items on on Cyber Monday. The only non-NHL Winter Classic product in the top 10? The Bruins black home jersey, which came in third. Here is the top 5:

1. Reebok Philadelphia Flyers 2012 NHL Winter Classic Reversible Knit Hat
2. CCM 2012 NHL Winter Classic Dueling Event T-shirt
3. Reebok Boston Bruins Premier Home Jersey
4. Reebok Philadelphia Flyers 2012 NHL Winter Classic Premier Jersey
5. HBO 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the 2011 NHL Winter Classic DVD

THOMAS TAKES HOME PLAYER OF THE MONTH HONORS: The NHL announced Thursday, December 1 that Tim Thomas has been named the NHL’s First Star of the Month of November. Thomas completed a perfect November going 9-0-0 in the month with three shutouts, a 1.76 Goals Against Average and a .941 Save Percentage. His nine straight victories established a new career long.

THE LAST TIME… a Bruin won NHL First Star of the Month honors? January 2011, when Patrice Bergeron led all NHL scorers with 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) and posted a +13 rating in 14 games.

B’S INK KREJCI TO 3 YEAR EXTENSION: GM Peter Chiarelli announced on Thursday, December 1 that the team signed David Krejci to a three-year deal worth $5.25 million per season. The 25-year-old Krejci has skated in 318 career NHL games – all with Boston – and has registered 62 goals and 165 assists for 227 points. During the Bruins 2010-11 Stanley Cup Championship run, Krejci finished as the NHL’s playoff scoring leader with 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points in 25 games, becoming the first Bruin to do so since Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr shared the postseason scoring title in 1972. His 12 playoff goals included four gamewinners (three of which came against the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals) and one hat trick (Game 6 loss versus Tampa in Eastern Conference Finals). He also had the primary assist on Nathan Horton’s gamewinning goal against Tampa in Game Seven that propelled the Bruins to their first Cup Final since 1990.

“TOYS FOR TOTS” DRIVE KICKS OFF SATURDAY: The Bruins will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for children in need through the US Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” program during their home games throughout December. The first collection takes place on Saturday, December 3 when the Bruins take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7:00 p.m.

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK: Short week for the competitors (similar to an NFL team having a game Sunday and then playing again four days later on Thursday) but we now have a tie atop the leaderboard, as Matt Kalman becomes the second media member to accumulate multiple TOTW wins this season. Responding to the various Bobby Ryan-for-David Krejci trade rumors that clouded the twittersphere on Tuesday and Wednesday, @TheBruinsBlog had this to say after the Krejci extension was announced on Thursday:

@TheBruinsBlog: "Oh well, time to start making up rumors about someone else #Bruins"

And here are this week’s Honorable Mentions, in no particular order:

@kevinwalshtv: "Going to read to my little princesses now. Please forward any insults to Shawn Thornton. He'll get right back 2 u. #Bruins"

@HacksWithHaggs: “I know there are plenty of people in Boston that think Bobby Lou is No. 1 RT @BotchonCanucks: Luongo on Cory: “we’re both no. 1s”

@GlobeFluto (Fluto Shinzawa, Boston Globe), 2 (Week 4, Week 5)
@TheBruinsBlog (Matt Kalman, TheBruinsBlog), 2 (Week 3, Week 8)
@ScottIsaacs (Scott Isaacs, WCVB), 1 (Week 1)
@DJ_Bean (DJ Bean,, 1 (Week 2)
@douglasflynn (Doug Flynn, NESN), 1 (Week 6)
@_TyAnderson (Ty Anderson,, 1 (Week 7)

Tim Thomas’ current 9-game win streak is most by a Boston goaltender since Andy Moog had 10 straight wins from February 27 – March 25, 1993. The club mark is 17, set by Gilles Gilbert in 1975-76 which is also the NHL record

PREVIOUS PROSPECT REPORT SUMMARY: The Bruins Communications Staff sent out their second edition of the Boston Bruins Prospect Report on December 2. It can be viewed online at and on the Bruins Media Website. In addition to notes on all players in the Bruins system and features on Carter Camper and Justin Florek, here are some of the other Prospect Report’s highlights:

POWER PLAY PROWESS: Forward Jamie Tardif seems to have a knack for power play goals while defenseman David Warsofsky and forward Carter Camper seem to enjoy assisting Tardif on those power play goals. Since last report, Providence has scored a total of six power play goals, five of which were from Tardif, all assisted by Camper and Warsofsky. The only other power play goal during that period not scored by Tardif was by Josh Hennessy from Jamie Arniel.

The selection camp will be held in Calgary on December 10, with the World Junior tournament scheduled for Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Calgary and Edmonton. Team USA will announce their preliminary roster on Tuesday, December 6.
