STATS OF THE WEEK: Heading in to the playoffs, David Krejci has led the Bruins in total points every week since the first week of the season. He has accrued 67 points this season, which is six shy of his career high (2008-09, 73). On Thursday, April 10, Krejci notched his 50th assist of the season, which is a team high. This is only the second time in the centerman’s NHL career in which he recorded 50 or more helpers (2008-09, 51).
CAMPBELL NOMINTATED FOR MASTERTON: Bruins forward Gregory Campbell has been selected as the Boston Bruins 2014 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominee by the Boston Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer's Association (PHWA). The Masterton Trophy is given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Campbell battled adversity entering the 2014 campaign, coming off a broken leg sustained in the second period of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Despite breaking his leg in a shorthanded situation, Campbell remained on the ice for the remaining 47 seconds of Penguin power play time, putting the team ahead of his own personal health, to help the Bruins kill off the penalty unscathed.
“Gregory Campbell’s entire hockey career has been about perseverance, dedication to hockey and paying the highest level of respect to the game he loves so much," said Joe Haggerty, PHWA Boston chapter chairman and Bruins beat reporter for CSNNE.com. "The image of Campbell gritting his way through excruciating pain to finish a penalty kill shift with a broken leg during last year’s conference final is one nobody will soon forget. It’s also the perfect example of Campbell’s dedication to his team, selflessness and willingness to give every last ounce he has to fully compete. That doesn't even include Campbell's heavy involvement in the community, including delivering pies to Boston homeless shelters on Thanksgiving morning each year. The Boston Chapter of the PHWA is proud to nominate Gregory Campbell for this season’s Masterton Trophy.”
Campbell, a staple on the Bruins’ energy line, has had a productive season for the Black & Gold registering seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 80 appearances this season. The Boston Bruins acquired Campbell on June 22, 2010 with Nathan Horton for Dennis Wideman, a 2010 first round draft and a 2011 third round draft pick. The winner of the Masterton Trophy is selected by a vote of the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the conclusion of the regular season.
JULIEN FOR JACK ADAMS: Bruins bench boss Claude Julien has led his squad to clinch a playoff spot for the seventh consecutive year in his seventh year as the head coach for the B’s, with the Black & Gold currently holding the first place spot for the league’s best record with 115 points. The Eastern Conference leading Bruins enter the weekend first in the NHL in GF/GA differential at plus-85, while maintaining the league’s second lowest goals against average at 2.09. On special teams, Julien’s Bruins rank third in the league on the power play (20.9%, 47-for-225) and eighth on the penalty kill (83.8%, 217-for-259). Julien has compiled a 427-250-10-88 record in 776 NHL games coached (.615 win percentage), including a 309-164-65 mark in 538 games (.635 win percentage) in Boston. Julien has had a milestone-filled season, coaching in his 700th NHL game in the 3-1 victory over Columbus on October 12, recording his 400th NHL win on December 23 against Nashville, appearing in his 500th game behind the Boston bench in the 4-1 over Winnipeg on January 4 and recently notching his 300th win as a Bruin on March 13 versus Phoenix. On the international stage, Julien was a member of Team Canada’s coaching staff at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi which saw Canada take home the gold medal.
TUUKKA TOPS IN THE LEAGUE: Tuukka Rask’s shutout win over the Chicago Blackhawks on March 27 marked his seventh blanking of the season, which leads the NHL. It is also the 23rd shutout of his career, which ties Jim Henry, for seventh overall on the Bruins all-time shutout list. Rask’s strong play throughout the 2013-14 campaign has put him in strong contention in the Vezina conversation with his 35 wins, which rank fifth in the NHL, his 2.06 goals against average which ranks fifth and a .929 save percentage which ranks second.
CHARA MAKING BID FOR THE NORRIS: Bruins Captain Zdeno Chara has enjoyed a strong season thus far both offensively and defensively. Often playing against the opposition’s top skaters in even-strength and shorthanded situations, Chara has stayed on the plus side of the +/- rating at plus-24. The veteran blueliner has been hot on the power play this season, notching 10 tallies with the man-advantage, which ranks second among all defensemen. Chara’s 17 goals rank fourth in the NHL among blueliners.
BERGERON SELKE RESUME: After earning the Selke Trophy in 2011-12 and being a finalist for the Selke in last year’s campaign, Patrice Bergeron has continued his consistent two-way play into the 2013-14 season. Often playing against the opposition’s top line and serving as one of the primary forwards on the PK, Bergeron enters the weekend second in the NHL with a plus-37 rating. The centerman currently ranks third in the league in faceoff percentage at 58.5% and leads the league in faceoff wins with 1,003, ahead of Antoine Vermette who has 984. Bergeron is tied for second on the Bruins in points (61), second in goals (29) and third in assists (32). Bergeron enters the weekend riding a 12-game point streak, compiling 10 goals and six assists from March 17 to April 8.
POSITIVE OUTLOOK: The Bruins own four of the top five spots in the league’s plus/minus leaders, and five out of the top 10. David Krejci leads the way at plus-38 while Patrice Bergeron ranks second in the NHL with a plus-37. Brad Marchand sits in third at plus-35 and Jarome Iginla is tied for fourth with plus-33. Rounding out the quintet is Johnny Boychuk whose plus-31 is tied for eighth among all skaters.
