Boston Bruins Week Ahead: 1/10 - 1/17

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins

BRUINS IN THE OLYMPICS: Five Bruins were selected to represent their respective countries in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia – Patrice Bergeron (Canada), Zdeno Chara (Slovakia), Loui Eriksson (Sweden), David Krejci (Czech Republic) and Tuukka Rask (Finland).  In the last three Olympic Games, several Bruins players have seen success on the international stage and have brought home medals: Bergeron (Gold, Canada) and Tim Thomas (Silver, U.S.) in 2010; P. J. Axelsson (Gold, Sweden) in 2006; and Brian Rolston and Bill Guerin (Silver, U.S.) and Sergei Samsonov (Bronze, Russia) in 2002.  Jarome Iginla won Gold with Canada in both 2010 and 2002 but was not with the Bruins at that time.

APPROACHING HIS-TOREY: There have been five defensemen in Bruins history to score 10-or-more goals in their rookie season. Ray Bourque holds the club mark with 17 in 1979-80, followed by Greg Hawgood (16, 1988-89), Bobby Orr (13, 1966-67), and Eddie Shore (12, 1926-27).  Current rookie Bruin Torey Krug has joined that list with 10 goals so far in the 2013-14 season. Entering the weekend, Krug is tied for fourth among NHL rookies in point production with 23.  The blueliner is also first among NHL rookies in power play points (12) and tied for second among NHL rookies in power play goals with four.

FIGHTING TO WIN: This season, the Bruins are 14-8-0 in games in which they have had a fighting penalty. Adam McQuaid leads the team in most fights this season with seven, followed by Shawn Thornton with five and Jarome Iginla with four bouts.  Since the 2011-12 season, Boston has compiled a 56-28-3 record in games in which they have been assessed a fighting major.

BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK (TOTW): In the 17th week of the Boston Media Tweet of the Week, New England Hockey Journal’s Jesse Connolly earns himself top tweet for his quirky musing about the different ways one can rearrange the name of B’s forward Justin Florek:

‏@JesseNEHJ: Everyone's told you Justin Florek's been called up, so I'm reporting you can rearrange his name to spell Joist Flunker or J. Fork Utensil.

This week’s honorable mentions listed in no particular order:

‏@kluedeke29: Loui, Loui...oh no- on what line you gonna go? Guessing he'll form 1/2 of Swedish bookends for Spooner on 3rd. #SpoonfeedtheSwedes h/t DT
‏@AmalieBenjamin: Best part of being back on the ice for Dougie? NESN cameras won't catch him eating pretzels on the 9th floor anymore
@DJ_Bean: Players often use "you" to describe themselves. Very kind of Dougie Hamilton to say, but I am not feeling stronger the last two weeks.

PREVIOUS PROSPECT REPORT SUMMARY: The Bruins Communications staff sent out the third edition of the 2013-14 Boston Bruins Prospect Report on December 18. It can be viewed online at and on the Bruins Media Website. In addition to notes and statistics on all players in the Bruins system, the report features stories on the depth of the Bruins organization.

PATRICE’S PALS: As a part of his continuing charitable initiative Patrice’s Pals, Bruins alternate captain Patrice Bergeron invites children from local hospitals and other organizations to experience a Bruins home game from his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags filled with Bruins memorabilia, a visit from the Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls, as well as a feature on the Garden HDX.  After the game, Patrice’s Pals are escorted to ice level and introduced to Patrice himself who signs autographs and takes pictures with his Pals. This will take place at all Boston Bruins home games during the 2013-14 season.

SAVVY’S SUITE: Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard has partnered with the Brain Injury Center at Children’s Hospital Boston, inviting children who suffer from the effects of Brain Trauma, both physically and psychologically, to attend a Bruins home game in his luxury suite. Children and their families receive goodie bags with Bruins memorabilia and a visit from Bruins Mascot Blades and Bruins Ice Girls. Savard started the program on Thursday, January 12, 2012, and it will continue through the end of the 2013-14 Bruins season.

COMMUNITY TICKET PROGRAM: For the entirety of the Boston Bruins 2013-14 regular season, Bruins Principal and Alternate Governor Charlie Jacobs is donating ten balcony tickets to every home game to children from charitable organizations across New England, who are invited to enjoy a Bruins home game from these donated seats.

BRAD’S BRIGADE IS BACK:  The 2013-14 season marks an exciting new chapter for Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand’s charitable program, “Brad’s Brigade”.  Established in 2010, Marchand’s program invites children from pediatric oncology units across New England to experience a Bruins home game. Children and their families sit in the loge section and are featured on the Garden HDX.  Each family also receives a Brad’s Brigade T-Shirt, a Garden Gold Card and a goodie bag with Bruins memorabilia.  At the conclusion of the game, families are escorted down to ice level where they have the opportunity to meet Marchand and get a photo taken with him.
