The NHL announced Thursday that Zdeno Chara
, Marc Savard
and Tim Thomas
were named to the Eastern Conference All-Star roster for the 2009 NHL All-Star game. This marks the fourth all-star appearance for Chara, the second for Savard and the second for Thomas. All three players represented the Bruins at last year's All-Star game.
In last year's All-Star game, Chara defended his Hardest Shot title with a 103.1 MPH blast during the SuperSkills competition, Savard scored the game-winning goal in the all-star game and Thomas was the winning goaltender.
The NHL announced Friday that Milan Lucic
and Blake Wheeler were selected to play in the 2009 NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck during NHL All-Star Weekend. This year, for the first time, the YoungStars Game will feature the NHL's top rookies against the NHL's top sophomores. Lucic will suit up for the sophs, while Wheeler will represent the rookies. The 10-player squads will square off Saturday, January 24 during the 2009 Honda/NHL SuperSkills competition at 7:00 p.m. ET at the Bell Centre in Montreal (National TV: VERSUS).
Lucic, who participated in last year's YoungStars game in Atlanta, has a NHL-best 154 hits and a team-high 84 penalty minutes to go along with 11 goals and 15 assists this year. The 6'3" 228-pound winger recorded his first career hat trick on October 25, 2008 against Atlanta. His 11 goals on the season surpass his entire rookie season total, where he had eight in 77 games.
Wheeler is among the rookie leaders in all major scoring categories including points (25, 2nd), goals (13, tied for 1st), assists (12, tied for 7th), and plus/minus (+25, 1st). His plus/minus rating ranks second in the entire NHL, behind teammate Marc Savard
(+28). Wheeler also had a hat trick this year, when he scored three goals against the Maple Leafs on November 6, 2008.
The NHL will announce the coaches of the All-Star teams immediately following the games played on Saturday, January 10. The All-Star coaches are the coaches of the top two teams in each conference in terms of points percentage (currently the Bruins and Sharks) through games of Jan. 10.
