- The NHL announced today that Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard
was named the First Star of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 23.
Savard led all NHL scorers with eight points (two goals, six assists) and helped lead the Bruins to four wins this past week, boosting the Black and Gold to first place in the Eastern Conference, two points clear of the New York Rangers. Their Northeast Division lead increased to seven points over the second place Montreal Canadiens.
Savard recorded two assists in a 3-2 victory over Toronto on November 17. Two days later, he added to his point totals with a goal and three assists as the Bruins topped Buffalo 7-4. On November 21, he scored a goal and tallied another assist in the Bruins 4-2 win over Florida.
Savard currently ranks second in the NHL in assists (19), and third in two categories: points (27), and plus/minus (+13). The center has recorded 225 assists since the start of the 2005-2006 season, second only to San Jose's Joe Thornton (272).
Henrik Sedin of the Canucks received the Second Star for tallying seven assists on Vancouver's 3-0-1 road trip. The Third Star went to goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin of Chicago for his 2.90 goals-against average and .918 save percentage effort, leading the Blackhawks to 3-0-0 on the week.
The Bruins return to action on Wednesday, November 26 at 7:00 p.m. ET against the Sabres in Buffalo. The club is 12-1-1 in their last 14 contests.
