Bear Essentials: Game Day @ Atlanta

by John Bishop / Boston Bruins
John Bishop is the beat writer for He covers the Black & Gold hoping to offer a positive look at the team, not only from the stands and the press box, but also from inside the locker room. A graduate of Boston U. and Northeastern, 'Bish' grew up in Connecticut and moved to the Hub of Hockey in 1993. Since then he has made all four rinks at the Beanpot schools, as well as both Gardens, his icebound homes away from home. He coauthored the book Bygone Boston in 2003 and hopes someday to pen a bio of Hobey Baker.
Good Day!

The Bruins had an optional practice this morning and the only news from Hotlanta was that Bobby Allen is out for this evening and will skate tomorrow. Meanwhile, Andrew Ference and Vladimir Sobotka are both available for tonight.

Over at, Fluto Shinzawa writes:
Alex Auld will make his third straight in goal tonight against the Thrashers.

Auld will have some added help in front of him…Marco Sturm (eye) will not play tonight. Claude Julien said there's still too much swelling around the eye for Sturm to be cleared for action. Julien said there's a good chance that Sturm will play tomorrow against New Jersey at TD Banknorth Garden…Vladimir Sobotka (shoulder), who's missed the last three games, will play tonight.

The mysterious Spector had some fun debunking a rumored deal between Montreal and San Jose that was supposedly started by noted hockey pundit Bob McKenzie:
TSN.CA: Bob McKenzie denied he'd stated on Montreal Sportsradio The Team 990 that the Canadiens and San Jose Sharks were talking about a possible trade where Saku Koivu and Michael Ryder would be swapped for Patrick Marleau and Steve Bernier. McKenzie admits suggesting some struggling teams (including the Canadiens) "are working extra hard to make something happen" but never suggested the Sharks and Habs were talking trade.  McKenzie wonders how his comments morphed into a Sharks-Habs trade rumor.

Spector's Note: I'll tell you how, Bob: the lack of real trade activity has some folks in the media and the internet clutching at straws and twisting anything into a potential trade rumor. I'm glad he cleared this up as I've been inundated with e-mails from Sharks and Canadiens fans asking about the validity of that rumor and when the trade might go down.

The Spector is very right. I get asked about rumored deals all the time and I feel funny addressing them sometimes. The bottom line is that if you have heard about previous to it happening -- it probably is not happening. Beyond that, until it lands on the front page it isn't true.

A nice story continues...
The Boston Bruins full roster of players and coaches will continue their annual tradition of delivering toys to children in local hospitals this year.  On Friday, December 14 the Bruins will be divided into seven groups, and each group will be at their respective hospital at 2:00 p.m. ET.

A total of $22,000 which was donated by the Bruins players and coaches, the Boston Bruins Foundation and Volvo was used by the team to shop for the toys last week at the Target in Woburn.

I will be along for at least part of that ride. If you recognize me from my awful pic -- say hi!

6:33 p.m.
Bobby Allen is out. Marco Sturm is out. Andrew Ference and Vladimir Sobotka are in.

6:54 p.m.
The Boston Globe's Fluto Shinzawa has (another) guess on tonight's lineup:
Chara-Stuart (sg) Auld
Alberts-Wideman (bg) Rask
Ference-Ward Go Bruins!

Fluto also reports:
Tim Thomas was placed on injured reserve today to make room for Andrew Ference on the active roster...GM Peter Chiarelli estimated that Thomas, who skated today at Ristuccia Arena, is about 5-7 days from returning. Chiarelli said that a healthy Thomas and Alex Auld would man the nets in in Boston, putting Tuukka Rask back in Providence.

Thanks for the info Fluto. Hope to reciprocate when you get back!

I'll see you on the running recap...
