Three words true believers…Do not panic.
Yah, I was there. Yah, at times, it was a bit discouraging. And yah, I wish the Bruins had been on the winning end of the score. But…and there is always a but.
This setback happened in September, during the first exhibition game on a day when most New Englanders were watching football and baseball.
Ok, so you’ve taken a deep breath. Your sights are set on Montreal, Tuesday and you can acknowledge that there is a learning curve for a very young team.
Feel better? Good. Chew on this while I write my game story:
“We learned an awful lot…The referees taught us what a foul was. The team all watched video the first day of training camp, we tried to practice it, but obviously when you get into a real game guys try to do more than they should. New Jersey is one of the most disciplined teams in the league as far as penalties go and they showed that tonight.”Head Coach, Dave Lewis, on the Bruins taking 13 penalties and yielding 4 power play goals
“You know, he was fine. He showed us something on the bench. He came back after the first goal upset at himself. He said, “I should have had that one guys, don’t blame yourselves.” That’s the first goal he has given up [during game play in training camp]. He made some really quality saves and was good in tight.”Lewis, on Hannu Toivonen’s first game in nine months
“We got ourselves in trouble by taking a lot of penalties. They’ve got a pretty good team out there and they are definitely going to capitalize on those chances if they get 5 on 3’s all the time. But on the positive side, we played pretty good 5 on 5, at least even 5 on 5.”Goalie, Hannu Toivonen
“It was a tough game. We had a lot of penalty killing, and penalty killing is not easy. They had a lot of good players in the lineup and they move the puck really well so it was tough. It’s tough too, [when a lot of penalties] disrupts the flow of the game. And it did that tonight…First exhibition game; you look at how you respond to things like that.”Forward, Brad BoyesClick here
