Stempniak, Backes to Play for USA Hockey

ST. LOUIS - USA Hockey announced that Blues forwards David Backes and Lee Stempniak were named to the 2008 United States Men’s National Team for the IIHF Men’s World Championships to be held from May 2-18 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Both players will be appearing in their second consecutive World Championship for Team USA.

Backes, 23, skated in 72 games for the Blues this season, recording 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) along with 99 penalty minutes. He ranked first on the team and fifth in the National Hockey League with 240 hits. Backes ranked second on the club in penalty minutes (99). The Minneapolis, Minnesota native was originally St. Louis’ second round selection, 62nd overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Stempniak, 25, played in 80 games with the Blues this season, recording 38 points (13 goals, 25 assists) and 40 penalty minutes. In the 2007 World Championship, he played in seven games and registered 10 points (six goals, four assists). The West Seneca, New York native was originally drafted by the Blues in the fifth round, 148th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
