ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues’ 2010 first round pick (14th overall) Jaden Schwartz
has been named Captain of Team Canada for the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships.
Schwartz joins Alex Pietrangelo
as the second member of the Blues’ organization in the last three years to captain Team Canada at the World Juniors.
The tournament will take place from Dec. 26, 2011 to Jan. 5, 2012 in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Team Canada will open their tournament schedule on Monday, Dec. 26 against Finland at Rexall Place in Edmonton.
Schwartz, 19, is currently in his second year at Colorado College and ranks second on the team with 18 points (five goals, 13 assists) in 13 games this season. During his first year, the 5’10, 188-pound forward led all freshman with 1.57 points per game while posting 47 points (17 goals, 30 assists) overall including 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in seven playoff games.
In addition, Schwartz was named to the 2011 All-Tournament Team at the NCAA West Regional as well as the National Rookie of the Year by Inside College Hockey.
Internationally, he appeared in two games with Team Canada at the 2011 World Juniors recording three points (one goal, two assists).
