ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo
and forward Chris Stewart
will represent Team Canada at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Men’s Championship in Slovakia.
Pietrangelo, 21, previously competed for Team Canada at both the 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Junior Championships winning gold and silver respectively. This past year, the 6’3, 206-pound defenseman completed his first full season in the NHL leading Blues defensemen in points (43), goals (11), assists (32), plus/minus (+18), power play goals (4) and time on ice per game (22:00). In addition, his plus-18 rating tied for 16th among all NHL defensemen while his 11 goals tied for 12th. On March 9 in Columbus, Pietrangelo scored his 10th career goal in his 81st career game becoming the third fastest defensemen in Blues history to reach 10 goals with the club behind only Brian Benning (69 games) and Bob Hess (79 games). The King City, Ontario native was drafted by St. Louis in the first round, 4th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Stewart, 23, will be making his Team Canada debut at this year’s tournament. This past year, the 6’3, 228-pound forward completed his third NHL season registering 53 points in 62 games played. His 28 goals for the season tied a career high and included a career best 12 power play goals which tied for 7th among all NHL skaters. On Feb. 19, he became the fifth player in Blues history to score two goals in his debut with the club while his six goals in his first five games were the best start to a Blues career in franchise history. Stewart was acquired by the Blues along with Kevin Shattenkirk
from Colorado on Feb. 19, 2011. The Toronto, Ontario native was originally drafted by Colorado in the first round, 18th overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
