Keith, 33, had 43 points (nine goals, 34 assists) in 67 regular-season games for the Blackhawks last season. He had three goals and two assists in six playoff games. Keith has helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup three times (2010, 2013, 2015) and won a gold medal with Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and in 2014. He won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman in 2010 and 2014.
"As Duncan continues offseason rehabilitation on the right knee injury that he sustained last season, we understand his decision not to participate in next month's World Cup of Hockey," Blackhawks head team physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a statement. "We believe it is in his best interests to focus on getting stronger and not risk further injury."
Bouwmeester is the second player to be added to Team Canada's roster in as many days; San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture replaced Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn, who is recovering from core muscle surgery, on Tuesday.
Eight teams -- Team Canada, Team Czech Republic, Team Europe, Team Finland, Team North America, Team Russia, Team Sweden and Team USA -- will compete at the World Cup from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1 in Toronto. All tournament games will be played at Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
