ST. LOUIS - Scottrade Center was electric on Wednesday as it housed almost 7,000 fans to witness two Mid-States High School hockey championship games.
Both contests featured a battle between top-seeded teams as the Wickenheiser Cup saw No. 1 Westminister battle No. 2 Ladue, and the St. Louis Blues Challenge Cup pitted No. 1 SLUH against No. 2 CBC.
The Wickenheiser Cup was first as the Westminister Wildcats outlasted the Ladue Rams 3-2, giving the Wildcats their first-ever state hockey championship. The Wildcats held a 3-1 lead coming into the third period but the Rams decreased the margin to make for an intense final few minutes. The Rams, however, were unable to find the equalizer.
The St. Louis Blues Challenge Cup featured the SLUH Jr. Billikens and the CBC Cadets. The Bills, who beat the Cadets three times during the regular season, found themselves in 3-0 hole after two periods of play. After the Cadets stretched their lead to four, the Bills found the back of the net to make it a 4-1 score towards the end of the third period, but the Bills wouldn't get any closer as CBC captured their fourth consecutive Challenge Cup championship. CBC goaltender Jack Caruso was named MVP.
