Backes Moving Up the All-Time Lists
by Chris Pinkert / St. Louis BluesVANCOUVER - What does Blues captain David Backes think of moving up the franchise’s all-time lists in games played, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes?
“It makes me think I’ve been here quite a while,” Backes jokes before the team's practice in Vancouver.
But seriously...
“I think those guys did it in a few less games, but it’s humbling and great to be part of a great organization for such a long duration," Backes says. "To have some statistics start to add up, it’s just an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as some of those guys.”
With two goals Wednesday night in Edmonton, Backes tied fan-favorite Pavol Demitra for sixth on the Blues’ goals list with 204.
But that's just the start.
Now in his 10th season as a Blue, Backes also ranks fifth all-time in games played (720), eighth all-time in assists (250), sixth in points (454) and fifth in penalty minutes (963).
Those categories put the Blues captain among such legends as Bernie Federko, Brian Sutter, Brett Hull, Garry Unger and Al MacInnis, to name a few.
“The guys on those lists, I never thought I’d be in any sort of circumstance to be mentioned with any of them, other than wearing the same jersey at some point in time,” Backes added. “It’s honoring, and I’m humbled by it.”
