"Z" Scores Three, But Not for "C"

by Bill Davidge / Columbus Blue Jackets

March 20

Henrik Zetterberg took it upon himself to change the complexion of the game around in 3-1 come from behind win over the CBJ. The Wings were being outplayed and took a back seat to an early second period goal by Manny Malhotra who scored his 5th in the last three games.

The Jackets had the opportunity to put it away with several scoring opportunities early, but a 1-for-7 PP and a couple of other issues clouded the cover of possible sunshine at the Joe for the visiting CBJ. Jared Boll suffered a hip injury, Dan Fritsche a hand injury and a couple of controversial non calls had ill affect on the psyche of the squad. Give credit to the third period hunger of the Wings as they outshot the CBJ 12-4 and the "natural hat trick" of Detroit's "Z" put the game out of reach.

Timely scoring and goaltending needed to be in the cards tonight, but the longer the Wings played and hung around, one knew what would result. The second best record on home ice in the NHL in front of a boisterous crowd, shaded the CBJ, now 3-2-1 in the season series. This could have been a huge win and one where the overall record of 23-4-6 when scoring first took a hit. Losses are big at this time of year, no question, but the way a team loses as in this contest hurts that much more.

What really is nice as a coach and a player?... Redemption… we do play our next game against the same opponent on Saturday in the confines of NWA, a 7 p.m. tilt.

Brett Lebda is the pride and joy of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. His alma mater plays against Miami, where my coaching ties began. We have a wager. They play in the semi-final round at JLA in the CCHA playoff championships.

ND wins?... I will don a Fighting Irish hat the first two weeks of golf season. Miami wins?... Brett will do the same… go Hawks!
