Wiz Show N Tell

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

“I was really excited for today. He’s really famous and I’m not.”

We’re sure the sixth grade would beg to differ after Kathleen Cox brought the ultimate show ‘n tell to Sells Middle School: Blue Jackets Defenseman James Wisniewski.

Kathleen’s Dad entered her on the Blue Jackets Facebook page for the Verizon Wireless “Show N Tell with the NHL” contest having no idea that she’d end up winning. Before today, she wasn’t even the biggest Blue Jacket fan in her house – that belonged to younger brother Ryan.

The day started when Wisniewski pulled up just after 8 a.m. to the Cox’s house in a limo – a white one to the delight of Kathleen – and presented her with her very own customized Blue Jackets jersey. The Blue Jackets Defenseman posed for pictures with the Cox family and then the whole family drove to Sells Middle School together.

Met by Blue Jackets Mascot Stinger and the cameras, Kathleen then escorted Wiz through the halls of Sells to meet with 100 other sixth-graders of her class. Kathleen interviewed Wiz in front of the class, where he shared his tips for healthy eating and revealed for the first time how he deals with dairy and gluten allergies while balancing an NHL schedule.

Questions were then opened to rest of the sixth-grade with highlights including Wiz’s favorite mustard (a jalapeno blend), other sports that he played in school (baseball), what profession he’d be if he wasn’t an NHL player (a historian) and how many times his teeth have been knocked out (six). The biggest laughs were reserved for when Wiz was asked how many fights he’s been in, after changing his initial answer to zero, he then shared “you just have to talk it out with guys sometimes.”

As for the famous part? We think Kathleen’s pretty well known around the sixth-grade now. Best Show N Tell ever.
