U.S. Women's National Team Takes Silver At Pre-Olympic Test Event

TORINO, Italy - The U.S. Women's National Team finished with a silver medal after earning a 2-2-0 record at the pre-Olympic Test Event in Torino, Italy. Team USA fell to gold-medal-winner Canada, 7-0 in the championship game at Palasport Olimpico tonight.

Canada got off to a 5-0 first period lead, converting on three power plays including two five-on-three situations. Dana Antal opened the scoring when she banked a shot from behind the net at 2:53.

Less than four minutes later, Hayley Wickenheiser converted on a Canadian power play, scoring from the high slot at 6:30. Just past the mid-point with Canada on a two-man advantage, Wickenheiser picked up a rebound low in the crease. Katie Weatherston tallied her first of two goals 1:44 later and notched Canada¹s second five-on-three goal with under three minutes remaining in the opening session.

Canada's Jayna Hefford scored the only goal of the second period and Cassie Campbell wrapped up the scoring at 16:18 of the third when she walked the puck in and netted a wrister from the hash marks.

Notes: Molly Engstrom (Siren, Wis.) was named to the tournament all-star team at the conclusion of the game.  The U.S. Women's National Team returns to action on Nov. 27 (Sun.) against Canada in the fourth game of the Hilton Family Skate to 2006 Tour. The game is set for 5 p.m. at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio ... Following tonight's final game, the men¹s teams from Italy and France will face-off. USA Hockey official Leah Wrazidlo will referee the game, becoming the first female to referee a men's game at this level.
