TORINO, Italy – The U.S. Women’s National Team improved to 2-0 at the pre-Olympic Test Event in Torino, Italy, earning a 3-0 victory over Sweden today. Kelly Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) scored two of Team USA’s three power-play goals and Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made 14 saves to earn the shutout.
With 15 minutes gone in the first session and Team USA on the power play, Stephens took an Angela Ruggiero (Harper Woods, Mich.) pass behind the net and scored a wrap-around goal for a 1-0 U.S. lead.
Midway through the second stanza with the USA again on the power play, Ruggiero fired a shot from the blue line and upped the U.S. lead to two. Just four minutes later, Stephens scored her second of the night, potting a shot from the doorstep.
Team USA will face Canada tomorrow afternoon in the last game of preliminary action. A final game between the tournament’s top teams will take place on Saturday.
NOTES: Team USA effectively killed four straight penalties in the first 11 minutes of play … The U.S. Women’s National Team will face international competition upon its return to the United States, battling Canada in the fourth game of the Hilton Family Skate to 2006 Tour on November 27 (Sun.) at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
