COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus Blue Jackets President and General Manager Doug MacLean today announced that Trent Cull has been named assistant coach of Syracuse Crunch, Columbus' American Hockey League affiliate.
“Trent has extensive experience as a player at the professional level. We know he will bring the same commitment and work ethic as a coach as he displayed as a player. His past two years working as an assistant coach under David Barr convinced us of his readiness to take on this role,” said Blue Jackets Executive Vice-President and Assistant General Manager Jim Clark, who oversees Syracuse’s hockey operations for Columbus.
“Trent will be a great addition to the Syracuse Crunch, not only because of his great work ethic, but his strong communication skills,” said Syracuse Crunch head coach Ross Yates. “He will be a great teacher for the young defensemen coming up through the organization.”
Cull, 32, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League. The Storm improved to 40-24-1-3 in the 2005-06 season, a 27-point improvement over the 2004-05 season.
A native of Georgetown, Ontario, Cull appeared in 435 career AHL games with St. John’s, Springfield, Wilkes-Barre, Houston and Syracuse, where he registered 20 goals and 50 assists for 70 points with 1,049 penalty minutes. During his stint with Syracuse from 2002-04, he appeared in 98 games and tallied 2-15-17 with 261 penalty minutes.
Originally signed as a free agent by the St. John’s Maple Leafs on June 4, 1994, Cull’s best professional season was in 2000-01 as a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, when he netted 11-15-26 points with 166 penalty minutes. He was a member of the Houston Aeros team that won the Turner Cup (IHL) in 1999-00 and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton team that went to the Calder Cup Finals in 2000-01.
He becomes the sixth assistant coach in Crunch history (Curt Fraser 1994-95, Ted Sator 1996-97, Glenn Patrick 1997 – 99, Barry Smith 1999-00 and Ross Yates 2000 – 2006).
