This Week in Blue Jackets History: December 23-29

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

December 23, 2000 – Columbus establishes a boatload of records in a wild 7-5 road win over the New York Islanders. For starters, it’s the first time ever that Columbus scores seven goals in a single game, which is still a team record (that's happened on three other occasions, all of which were victories). The game also marks the first four-point effort by a Blue Jacket as Espen Knutsen tallies a goal and three helpers. Overall, the team combines for 13 assists and 20 total points, both franchise marks. Serge Aubin buries his second goal of the night into an empty cage to help ice the win, which happens to be the first time in team history that Columbus gets an empty-netter on the road. Strangely enough, Aubin also notched the first ever Jackets' empty-net goal at home.

December 26, 2005 – Jaroslav Balastik provides a post-Christmas gift as he nets the OT winner in a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in front of a happy home crowd on Boxing Day. The win begins a turnaround for the Blue Jackets after five straight defeats. Columbus goes on to win 14 of the next 21 games to set the tone for a strong second half in the 2005-06 season.

December 29, 2005 – Goaltender Marc Denis turns away all 40 shots he faces, stoning the Anaheim Ducks (still Mighty then) in an impressive 1-0 home win. It's the last of 12 shutouts in Denis' Columbus career and also the highest save total among any Jackets' goaltenders to post a donut, at that time. Fredrik Norrena establishes the new mark on December 5, 2006 when he stops 42 shots in Colorado.

December 29, 2006 – Joakim Lindstrom scores the first goal of his NHL career on the road in Minnesota as he beats the Wild's Manny Fernandez. The talented center from Skelleftea, Sweden tallies his second NHL marker earlier this season, with the opportunity to add more after a recent call up from Syracuse, where he's been ripping up the AHL with 22 goals and 26 assists in 50 games.
