Day One of the Columbus Blue Jackets' 2009 training camp included a four-team tournament featuring teams selected by the club's ownership group. Games were comprised of a 30-minute first period and 20-minute second period with three goaltenders rotating among each team in each game.
GAME 1 RECAP
Team Crane tops Team McConnell 3-2 in a shootout
Defenseman John Moore's goal in the fifth round of the shootout lifted Team Crane to a 3-2 win over Team McConnell in the first game of the Columbus Blue Jackets' Owners Tournament during day one of the team's ninth training camp. Moore, the Blue Jackets' top pick in last June's Entry Draft, beat goaltender Steve Mason with a low glove side shot.
Moore's goal capped a hard-fought game that saw both teams enjoy leads. Team McConnell jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when defenseman Brent Regner beat Dan LaCosta six minutes into the first period. The lead stood for eight minutes before Team Crane's Darren Archibald gathered a loose puck and tapped it past Mason to tie the game at 1-1.
Team Crane took its first lead of the game just six minutes later when Derek Dorsett took a cross-ice pass from Derick Brassard to beat Mason and give his squad a 2-1 lead to round out the first period scoring.
In addition to the three goals, the first period featured a spirit fight between forwards Archibald and Kevin Harvey and three thunderous hits. Team McConnell's R.J. Umberger delivered a big hit along the boards to Team Crane's Derick Brassard and Raffi Torres did the same to Pascal Pelletier. The biggest hit of the period was delivered by Team McConnell defenseman Rostislav Klesla who leveled forward Brock McBride with an open ice hit just inside the defensive zone.
Team McConnell had a glorious chance to even the game 4:30 into the second period when Umberger sprung Torres for a breakaway, but his wrist shot sailed just high over the crossbar. Just 3:30 later, the squad did even the game when Antoine Vermette gathered in a rebound of an Umberger shot and deposited the puck past Mason to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team scored over the final 12 minutes of the period, setting the stage for a shootout. Team McConnell led 1-0 after the first round as Matt Caria beat goaltender Andrew Loverock and Mason stopped Brassard. Loverock rebounded to stop Vermette and Pascal Pelletier beat Mason to even the shootout at 1-1 through two rounds. Loverock then stopped Umberger, Torres and Stefan Legein, while Mason denied Matt Calvert and Daniel Steiner before Moore's goal ended it.
Goaltenders Steve Mason (three goals against), Dan LaCosta (one goal against) and Andrew Loverock (no goals against) rotated amongst both teams during the game.
GAME 2 RECAP
Team Wolfe storms back to stop Team Pizzuti 5-3
Team Wolfe scored four goals in a span of 2:30 early in the second period to overcome a 3-0 deficit to beat Team Pizzuti 5-3 in the second game of the Columbus Blue Jackets' Owners Tournament. Left Wing Tom Sestito capped the goal flurry when he one-timed a Jared Boll pass by goaltender Jamie Tucker at the 5:00 mark of the period for the game-winner.
The contest looked like a rout after one period as Team Pizzuti scored three times in the first 21:30 of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Center Scott Tanski opened the scoring for Team Pizzuti when he fired the puck past goaltender Kevin Lalande seven minutes in for the game's first goal. The squad extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the period as Jakub Voracek gathered the puck behind the net and flipped a centering pass towards the middle of the ice. Nikita Filatov batted the puck out of the air past Lalande to score the most spectacular goal of the day. Just 5:30 later, Team Pizzuti went ahead 3-0 by converting a two-on-one break as Tyler Murovich took a pass from Maksim Mayorov and slipped it past Lalande at the 21:30 mark.
Taking the ice for the second and final period, Team Wolfe scored early and often against Tucker, who had just entered the game. The onslaught began when Jon Mirasty converted a rebound to cut the Pizzuti lead to 3-1 at the 2:30 mark. Exactly one minute later, Kris Russell took a feed from Kristian Huselius and chipped the puck past Tucker to pull Team Wolfe within a goal at 3-2. The squad tied the game at 3-3 a little over a minute later when Rick Nash scored on a breakaway at the 4:30 mark to set the stage for Sestito's goal, which capped the onslaught just 30 seconds later. The game remained 4-3 over the next eight minutes as Tucker stopped Huselius on a breakaway at the 8:00 mark and Nash rang a shot off the post during an odd-man rush midway through the period. Team Wolfe iced the game when Grant Clitsome converted a nifty pass from Nash with 7:00 remaining to account for the 5-3 final score.
Goaltender Mathieu Garon played the first period for Team Pizzuti and the second for Team Wolfe and registered a shutout in net. Lalande played the first period for Team Wolfe and allowed three goals, while Tucker surrendered five for Team Pizzuti in the second period.
