Some Hockey Tidbits on Day One of Round Two
•Ron Hainsey is being talked about in Boston papers as a good fit for their defensive core.
•Dion Phaneuf in the top 3 of D in the NHL… Keenan says he is proud of him and how his game has taken the next step.
•Laviolette may be out? Not much conversation in the Hurricane camp.
•No news here… Kane Toews and Backstrom for the Calder… case closed. Kane Rookie of the year!
•Theodore a key cog in Colorado's wheel of success along with the contributions of Sakic, Forsberg and Foote. If Jose goes so does the rest of the Avs. During the season the Wings won the series 4-0 shutting out the Avs 3x… look for that not to be the case. This will be physical and as a fan fun to watch! Colorado up 3-2 in lifetime Stanley Cup series.
•Zubov in for Dallas for the SJ series?… after a sports hernia and a screw put in his ankle, he may be utilized in the second round… Modano says Zubs at 60% is better than some at 100%
•Matthieu Garon and Sam Gagner join Team Canada for the Hitchcock coached squad.
•Doug MacLean has his hat in the coaching ring for the Panthers.
•Len Barrie and Oren Koules will soon be proud owners of the Lightning… they got a little help with financing from the current Davidson ownership group.
•Canada has one lone team in the playoffs now… come on Montreal says everyone north of the border… RDS says that over 3.08 million homes tuned into the end of the 7th game against the Bruins, a new record for households watching on that network.
•Jean Beliveau truly was upset with the Montreal fans as they rioted and damaged 16 police cruisers… similar to the 1955 riots when Clarence Campbell suspended superstar Rocket Richard.
•Barry Trotz and staff were rewarded two-year deals to remain in Nashville. Deservedly so, and there is not many in the game any more cordial and warming to the media than Trotz.
•NYR-PITT series will be interesting to say the least… look for this one to have some water cooler discussions in the morning after with the likes of Avery, Jagr, Crosby and Malkin.
•Mike Gillis the new GM of the Canucks signed a five-year deal… what would Dave Nonis have done in five years?.... his tenure was highlighted by the Robert Luongo deal. Gillis says his team is not even close to being a winner. Harsh words for his first day on the job. Tambellini and Vigneault are apparently safe, but the amateur scouting department has the burner turned up to hot.
•Bruce Boudreau was awarded a new “long time” contract as Geroge McPhee puts it.
•NBC says viewer ship is up 11% from last year as they work out a new deal with the NHL
•Speaking of viewership, let me end this tidbit and prepare the coffee table with low-carb treats and some red wine… good night from Oxford, Ohio!!
