COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Scott Hartnell has been named the National Hockey League’s First Star of the Week for the period ending March 15, the League and club announced today. New York Rangers goaltender Cam Talbot was named Second Star, while Ottawa Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond was the Third Star selection.
Hartnell scored five goals, collected 15 shots on goal and was +3 in four games last week to lead the Blue Jackets to a 3-1-0 record. On March 10, he scored two goals with his club trailing 3-1 and fired off a game-high seven shots as Columbus earned a 4-3 shootout win at Carolina. Two nights later, he tallied the game-winning goal in a 3-1 victory at Detroit. He then scored the game-tying goal at 16:23 of the third period in a 5-4 SO win vs. Edmonton on March 13 and extended his goal-scoring streak to four games with a goal in a 3-2 loss vs. Carolina on Mar. 15.
Acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Flyers in June 2014, Hartnell has tallied 21-27-48 and 90 penalty minutes in 64 games this season. He ranks third on the club in goals, assists and points and is tied for second with seven power play goals. He has racked up 15-16-31 in 36 games since December 27, including 7-2-9 in his last eight outings to surpass the 20-goal mark for the eighth time in his NHL career. The Regina, Saskatchewan native has registered 271-314-585 and 1,542 penalty minutes in 1,017 career NHL games.
