DETROIT -- The NHL's Department of Player Safety has suspended Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta 10 games for an illegal check to the head of Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson last week.
Early on in last Thursday's game at First Niagara Center in Buffalo (the 3:10 mark of the first period, to be precise), Kaleta delivered a high hit to Johnson's head. A fight broke out shortly thereafter, with Jared Boll and Kaleta dropping the gloves immediately following the incident. No penalty was called on the play, but the Department of Player Safert requested an in-person hearing with Kaleta after the game.
Thursday's incident was the fourth such for Kaleta and he is classified as a repeat offender. Here's more from the NHL:
"Kaleta is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, will forfeit $152,439.00. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund."
