Rookies Fall to Stars 5-4

by Staff Writer / Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets fell to the Dallas Stars 5-4 at the prospects' tournament Sunday in Traverse City, Mich.

The Jackets led 3-1 and 4-2, but the Stars scored all five of their goals on the power plays, while the Jackets converted just 1-of-8 with the man-advantage. Columbus built its 3-1 lead in the first period on goals from Matt Calvert, Brandon Mashinter and Brian McGuirk.

Jackets goalie Sebastien Dahm faced 32 shots, making 27 saves. Forward Jakub Voracek had two assists and center John Hughes had a goal and two assists to lead the way for Columbus.

It took all of two games in the tournament to see our first shootout. Columbus took this one from Minnesota, 2-0 in the shootout to win the game, 4-3.

Jackets goalie Dan LaCosta stopped all four Wild shooters, including Morten Madsen, Cal Clutterbuck, Tyler Cuma and Chris Culligan. Jakub Voracek and Matt Calvert beat Wild goalie Cody St. Jacques for the shootout goals.

Voracek was Columbus' first shooter and he looked cool, calm and collected. He went right down the center and with a no frills attached shot beat St. Jacques with a low shot just inside the left post. It looks as though Voracek has the entire package, at least from what I can tell from one game in a prospects tournament, so take that for what it's worth.

Calvert had the highlight goal to cap the shootout and a great game by smoking a shot into the top right corner. During the overtime, Columbus killed off tripping penalty on Grant Clitsome. The six penalty killers the Jackets used were Brian McGuirk, Steve Delisle, Nick Holden, Rob Page, Erik Felde and Brent Regner.
